Based on other posts I am guessing this happened a few days ago on 4/26. According to these reports the reason for the ad is to “help provide our users with a great search experience”. I didn't see it myself but I think it was an awesome gesture from Google. Google has publicly shown their support for Firefox and they even used it during the Keynote at the 2006 CES. Great stuff.
