Bob has a point. I think I remember seeing someone selling a tool to help you set up a couple of 1000 blogs, just to get links to your website. How do we measure the number of blogs that are legitimate and the ones set up by bots?

[...] There’s some crazy ruckus going on next door… I bet its Lee and his posse throwing down. On a serious note. I had the pleasure of meeting Lee Odden today (for real!) and was very pleased with his cordiality. He is very presentable and well-spoken and I cannot wait to hear him speak at the Public Relations session tomorrow. I also added him to my Blogroll. He probably won’t believe me if I said that I have always planned to add him, since his blog is part of my daily reading… but it’s true! [...]

Hey Lee, I am indeed at the Hotel Commonwealth! If you see a couple walking around with two little dogs... that's my girlfriend and I :) I am still tweaking my blog, including the blogroll, so keep a lookout!

P.S. No need to apologize... Your little comment about me posting drunk was more of a compliment :P

i agree lee. blogs have a lot going for them and are definately what one makes of them. blogs are evolving with many new features as you mention, and are creating a great synergy throughout the internet. the blogs now are much more advanced than the blogs of 1 year ago and i believe the blogs will be that much more advanced a year from now. with many available plug-ins now and many more to come the advancement of the blog will blur the line between "blog" and traditional "website" even more.

blogs came out with a catchy name and simplicity that swept the web in great viral fashion. it is the perfect idea for viral marketing. but as the vacuum, ala seth godin, fills, the blur will continue.

none of this is to diminish what the blog is. the phenomenon needs an identity and a great one it has, and it should be used to one's advantage and full potential.

Hey Chris, you have a good point. The thing is, while blogs are indeed just web sites with an easy to use content management system, they are more because of:
1. RSS feeds
2. Trackbacks
3. Comments
4. RSS - oh, did I say that before? Ha, it's worth mentioning again
5. Blogs easily interact with each other. Websites are a hit or miss.

I think blogs are just tools. And like any tool, what you get out of it depends on your expertise with that tool. Give one person a blog, and they'll just post when they're drunk. Oops, sorry Kid Disco :).

Give someone else a blog and they're making $10k/mo. It's all about what you do with it.

Hey Kid Disco, you would happen to be at the Commonwealth, would you? That's where Thomas and I are. I pretty much finished up my presentation on the plane. Now if I can just remember what to say .... I like your blog design except for a missing link in your blogroll. :) JK.

Hi Bob, I have no doubt there is a ton of blog spam out there. However, I don't see this as any different than all the crappy tombstone web sites that were created in the late nineties. I think the crud will continue to spawn, but also that it will filter out and sink.

they are not a passing phase but i think the 'blog' term may fade. call it what you want but i don't see a blog as anything different than a traditional content based website. to me a "blog" is just the framework behind the site, a method for easy publication. blogs brought web publishing to the masses, a cheap and easy way for the non-programmer to put up a web site and conveniently add and maintain content. it's been a great explosion for everyone (except the mainstream publishers) because now anybody with expertise in a field can easily share it and we all can learn from them. from now on most websites will be created by the blog-like "just add content" applications. so back to square one like it always has been, the websites with the best and most active content will attract the visitors, we just have more websites to choose from. it does not matter what you call them....

cheers,
chris

Add me to the blogosphere! I just posted my first "official" entry today. You should be able to get to it by clicking on my name.

Looking forward to hearing you speak at the conference, Lee! I flew in yesterday and I am watching the last mile of the Boston Marathon outside my hotel window, as I type!

It would be interesting to know how many of those blogs are spam and how many are actual useful blogs. With the tools available these days it is so easy to build 1000 blogs by yourself in a day!

I think it's interesting too that the competition to get eyeballs on a blog apparently increases by 1.2 million everyday. I mean, who has the time to read all these blogs. It's really crazy.
