I agree with you about Kevin Lee taking a "self serving" position, as I have seen that in Kevin's articles for a long time (although he does it very subtly). The problem with some attempts at "viral" self promotion is that they can stir a kind of "East Coast vs. West Coast" gang mentality retaliation that is not good for either side. I would have higher expectations of a member of the board of directors of SEMPO who is supposed to promote SEM (Search Engine Marketing) which includes both SEO and PPC.

It should be interesting to see how much the major search engines go after that top echelon of prospects/accounts that Did-it goes after with free user friendly assistance. The proprietary software of any of these PPC service companies has to keep getting better and better in order to maintain a legitimate and valuable edge. For big prospects/accounts, they have to decide where their "point of diminishing returns" is.

Right, clients might not care if PPC or SEO methods are used. Ultimately, they want their products and services visible in search engine results. Often, both PPC and SEO are useful. Or, if SEO is the long term solution, PPC is good for short term traffic and to fine tune keywords. SEO is an important part of SEM. So is PPC. They are not necessarily mutually exclusive. I'm guessing these guys are trying to force some buzz. Makes them look silly, though. It backfires.

Hi Richard, I think Andy was reacting to the Paternack's sweeping generalizations with another sweeping generalization.

It's too bad some of the vocal PPC and SEO proponents can't "get it" that clients are not served with a mutually exclusive mentality about paid and natural search.

Kevin Lee joined in yesterday in his ClickZ column referencing natural search marketers only as "SEO spammers". It's a self serving position and not client centric at all.

Lee - Thanks for your comments on my blog about my comments on your blog about your interview with Stacy Williams. ;-)

This interview with Andy Beal's a good one. I've just posted "Top 7 Reasons Andy Beal's Answer to Question #8 of Lee Odden's 10 Questions is Wrong" over on my blog. His assertion that SEO is hard and PPC is easy with statements like "anyone can manage a campaign without the need for outside assistance" is just plain silly. Were you taken aback by such a dumb answer from a smart guy?

"What could search engines be doing better in terms of communicating with the SEO community? Are there tools for search marketers from the search engines that you would like to see?...."
I'd like to comment Andy's answer. I found that the Google Webmaster tolls (including the webmaster central) worth nothing. The idea is friendly, but I do not believe that Google or Yahoo wants to share more information with us. Andy, why do you desire more information about what a search engine likes or not. The aim of search engines to serve the searching public with a relavant linklist (and to make money...). Not to help webmasters...
The only thing that makes me nervous all the time, that search engines do not allow you to make mistakes. If you commit a fault you will be punished for a long time. The only problem is that foults are not described obviously. This is the point where more informations are needed from the search engine developers. Any other information mentioned by Andy belogs to the field of web analytics.
