At Search Engine Strategies conferences there are always after-conference events and last night was no exception. The SES Dinner hosted by Allan Dick of Vintage Tub and Bath was definitely a winner in my book.
Sponsors included: Hitwise, pepperjamSEARCH, Range Online Media, Performics and Bizresearch who were all limited to using a single haiku (a 17-syllable Japanese poem) to tell the dinner attendees bout their services. Then we graded their performances and the top two winners won the highly-coveted “Footie” award (a clawfoot tub foot bolted to a wooden base). Todd Friesen of Range Online Media was a winner, and I believe pepperjamSEARCH was the other winner. I have videos of each haiku and will be uploading them to Google video later this week.
The dinner was held at Fogo De Chao Brazilian Steakhouse and the food was absolutely amazing. I do believe I came close to a werty meat coma.
I sat across from two staffers (Jessica and Traci) with BizResearch pictured here with their CEO Laura Thieme. I should note that Laura did her haiku in Russian (complete with fur hat) and in English. Alas, it was a tough crowd and she did not win.
Shoemoney was there taking lots of pictures. See his photos from last year here.
There was also a prize drawing with giveaways from attendees like Brian Mark of ToolBarn.com (Chris Sherman won for the second year in a row) and Rand Fishkin got in the game and gave away a link from SEOMoz. From the look on the winner’s face, I am not sure he knew what to do with such a prized gift.
There were many other items given away, but I was having too much fun throwing around the balsa wood airplanes and talking to Jonah Stein, a VERY savvy/smart SEO/SEM Director from Alchemist Media.
At the end of the dinner, Katrina Markoff of Vosges Chocolate did a chocolate truffle tasting, which was a fantastic and we were all sent home with another box along with a catalog.
There was also this cool t-shirt, “Trust in Search” in a cold war-Soviet style theme. Nice.
Thank you to Incisive and Allan for inviting me to the dinner, it was fantastic.

[...] I’ve casually known Laura Thieme of BizResearch for about 2 years but for some reason our paths crossed repeatedly at the recent Chicago Search Engine Strategies conference. First it was the in the speaker ready room, then the most excellent¬† Vintage Tub and Bath SES Dinner (yeah Allan!) where I sat across the table from her team members Traci and Jessica, then again during the conference, then the ClickTracks party and finally on the last day of the conference when I asked her to do a short interview.
