I like the idea of having a push distribution network.

You still need a cost effective strategy to identify new distribution channel partners in order to build out the network.

RSS (Google Reader, for example) + RSS Google Alerts (on relevant keyword phrases) is a one way to monitor whether there are new content distribution opportunities relevant to you. Lowers the cost of researching and building out the content distribution network, which helps improve the ROI.

Very interesting article, we are a recent start up viral advertising company, and we have had difficulty making the first steps towards becoming known. Reciprocal links seem to be as damaging as they are useful and we haven't had much luck with the social networking sites. The only thing that has really worked for us is Youtube, which had provided over 700,000 hits for our first viral video. The thing that really would interest me is getting bloggers to add our content on to their websites, but I have no idea how to make that happen. Any ideas?

[...] For more aggressive online marketers, waiting for visitors to find your content and then decide to bookmark isn’t enough. Building up profiles and networks of friends to introduce and share content with can drive great traffic that folds well with an active bookmarking strategy.
Great tips Lee, and being able to reach a wide audience via these methods can be the difference between a quality piece of content getting a couple of Digg votes to a story promoted to the homepage, obviously increasing the potential of inbound links massively.

The concepts here are nothing more than fundamental marketing, but realizing the effect networks of distribution can have on search can help marketers leverage existing marketing activities in a way that provides a distinct advantage and would make it difficult to competitors to catch up.

Most important part of the whole article :)

I see a lot of this going on, although to be honest I think it's natural market behavior, with anyone who has a following / user-base would want to radically increase the cost of 'leaving' for their users and protect their own little (or large) herd :)

This gets really interesting when one marketer decides to eat into another marketer's audience. Fun to watch, unless you're on the winning side.

This is something I've been working on myself. I find the content creation side of things relatively easy, the link building side not so simple. I've learned to put aside time for blog commenting, writing articles specifically for distribution and I know I'm going to have to get better about social bookmarking. It all makes a difference.

[...] Lee Odden over at the Online Marketing Blog seems to be able to appreciate this. As he notes: The key to realizing the linking benefit from creating useful, engaging and unique content is to create channels of distribution. As the network of people paying attention to your web site or blog grows, the greater the number of unsolicited links will occur. The more links, the more traffic and link popularity for rankings on search engines. [...]

Well done, Lee. As you point out the overall approach is one of unified marketing with search as a distinct component, perhaps an essential component of any distribution network. With an eye on SEO different marketing methods can be leveraged:

- Blogs can be optimized and widgets can be added to increase exposure and sharing.

- Newsletters with relevant content can be archived to attract link citations; subscribers can be encouraged to share them w/ colleagues; they can be used effectively to drive interest, traffic, etc.

- We all know the power of social media sites like Stumbleupon, digg, delicious, et al

- Forums and comments help put you at the center of social interaction, encourage links and traffic, and build transparency and trust w/ your (potential) customer base.

- Press releases can be optimized for social media and SEO.
