Kev - yes, I have to agree with you. I have been using Stumbleupon and MyBlogLog more and more lately too. It's kind of addicting.

I think if you had listed MyBlogLog specifically in the social networking category, it would have received a lot more votes. The thing is people associate it with blogs, and not Myspace.

I definitely hit my MBL community more often than Digg, even if it is just to check stats and messages.

I used to visit Digg regularly but I've found that I'm using social media sites like StumbleUpon, MyBlogLog and LinkedIn a lot more frequently over the last couple of months.

Unfortunately when you start moving into the other social media types, there are no "top" companies. Many social media functions in the wireless arena are actually hidden in marketing layers and technical whitepapers being released to industry partners.

I even get a laugh, as being in Seattle lends me to walking down the street and finding a not-so-little VC funded social media company almost every time I get a cup of coffee.

I love services like Dodgeball (now a quiet Google project) or even the BlogMap. Another general social media that is a great marketing tool is the rampant use of hotspots and gepgraphic WIFI.

Ultimately they all drive content from video services like YouTube or community platforms like MySpace, but the convergance of the markets is everywhere.

I rarely use Digg as well. Haven't really considered it being an interesting place for me to hang out - at least not yet.

I agree that social bookmarking sites are skewed by overzealous marketers, but there's still a lot of value. As far as digg goes, I visit from time to time for entertainment value, not for news.

Barry, you're right this isn't comprehensive as I've indicated in the post. If have some specific sites examples for the types you've listed, that would be great.

I don't think that is really a comprehensive list of social media to tally up results. There are a variety of wireless, desktop, geo-location, affiliate, and user interaction modules that are social medias.

There are also cross over types like mybloglog that bump into "other"

Lee - when I want to read about Social Media, I typically go to Technorati and do a search. I prefer to read about it through others' points of view; and not what Digg (and other similar sites) considers being important.

I rarely see any good commentary/articles on Digg anyway, but then again I don't frequent Digg very often anymore.

Social bookmarking websites have lost the function they were supposed to do. Just because of their users. Most of their users are bloggers and webmasters who are trying to take their posts to the home page. So the traffic we receive from these websites is not a quality traffic. I mean ordinary internet users who are looking for something and when come to our websites, will click on the ads, don't use the social bookmarking websites generally. I personally don't use them.
