I'd personally like to see more insights/interviews with client-side folks vs consultant/agency-side "gurus." I nominate Dan Perry of Cars.com or Duane Forrester of SportsDirect (uh-oh, they're going to kill me for that.) But seriously... both of them are huge proponents of the client side of SEM - very active in SEMPO's in-house committee as well as innovating for their own companies.

While it is most certainly interesting to get crystal-ball-gazing and otherwise hear from industry insiders and highly innovative agency/consultant folks (and I love reading that stuff!) I also think that practical advice & tips from people "in the trenches" is another good perspective to have.

Wow, what a fantastic group of feedback comments. Very much appreciated!

Sorry for not responding sooner, but I have for the most part, been offline since Friday and will be for the next 6-7 days or so on vacation.

Ammon, I agree that "what" you ask is as imporant or more than "who" you ask. Timing can come into play as well.

For example, when I interviewed Rand the first time, he had just been featured in Newsweek.

I will be conducting 3-4 text interviews before the conference and as many video interviews as are reasonable at the conference.

Researching questioons on text interviews is absolutely crucial to an interesting, useful and informative interview. Part of the reason I haven't done many interviews recently is because of the research commitment I think is necessary.

Am very much looking forward to finalizing a wish list and a confirmed list of interviewees in the next 2 weeks or so.

Lee I think it would be a good idea to do some text interviews with people aswell, they can often make for a great read and a good reference rather then trying to remember who said what at what point in a video / audio

Cheers,
Glen

With interviews, I often find that "what you ask" is actually more important than "who you ask" in terms of getting some great info out. Interview anyone you like, but mke the questions probing and insightful and you're onto a winner.

That said, who you ask will affect what you can ask, in that you can't really ask someone to summarise the real changes of the industry in the past 5 years if they've only really been deeply in the space for 3... ;)

My preference is that you interview someone with a track record of at least 4-5 years in the trade - a time scale just enough to show they've weathered some changes, not just got lucky with a single 'phase' of the biz.

If, in fact, Robert Clough is a real person...and I stress the *IF* factor...then I second the idea of Lee interviewing him.

The entire search marketing world has waited nearly nine years to have this mystery man unmasked. What a coup it would be for you if you were the one to do it. ;)

(To note, I know where he's staying and I *CAN* be bought with the proper amount of chocolate.)

The elusive Robert Clough of Search Engine Guide will be attending his first SES. He would be a great interview as most of us have never seen him in person. Although I know him via online communications and telephone, I am looking forward to meeting him in person.

Lee, sure you can interview Michael Gray, Barry S, DaveN, Rand, Danny, etc. and they will give you a great interview, and I'll read the story, and people will link to it. But are they really going to tell you something that hasn't already been said on their own sites or to other interviewers? If you want a real challenge, I'd look for a lesser known individual that has some of their own insights that haven't already been blasted around the blogosphere 300 times.

It's a big internet and there are thousands of excellent SEOs and marketers out there that aren't on Matt Cutts subscribed feeds list. (as proven by your own excellent list of blogs)

Just one mans opinion.
