"I started looking around for freelancers and subcontractors to work with me on specific accounts. It was then that I realized just how much of a skills shortage there is in the industry.

In particular, trying to find people who have had big site SEO experience (sites with more than a million pages) and also those who can work internationally and deal with cultural differences as well as everything else."

Funny Mike - But I never got that call. ;)

Next time - I'm sneaking the live green chili onto your plate at dinner...

100% true… And what's more: 1999??? The SEO that worked for me in 2005 was much better than 1999, which seemed simplistic and archaic then. And then I learned the hard way not to over-optimize.

I got into AdWords consulting, but now with rising CPC's, that also is more difficult. Certain industries are impenetrable, and more and more I find clients who simply don't have the conversion rates to profit with AdWords.

Which is what has led me to finally try to understand persuasion architecture, personas, etc. My current project is combining those with multivariate testing.

Back to SEO, I've experimented with many of the Web 2.0 sites and applications looking for good traffic options, and find about 90% of them to be a waste of time.

For the most part, my SEO is cautious- I think being a good SEOptimizer is just as much about what NOT to do- what used to be a good idea but isn't, or what seems spammy and you can guess Google wouldn't like it and will figure out how to penalize you for it later... don't do it.

first congrats on the bruce clay gig, he and danny sullivan are the two people that seem to have been here from the beginning..

as opposed to..

"The entry level into SEO is not very high. Just spend a grand on some tools such as rank checkers, back link checkers, keyword density analyzers etc. And even if you’ve only been in the business for five minutes, start throwing those terms around in front of an uninformed client, then tell him you’re an SEO Guru. He’ll believe you."

- and then send spam to everyone trying to trade links...

FYI.. Links are on their way out..
just pulled a first in Google for a rather large SEO term and several of the variations...

-no link trading
-no sitemap

The world is being overrun by PPC idiots and I for one am happy about it. Organic SEO seems to be something that people will never understand, and it seems like you nor myself will be expalining it in complete detail anytime soon..

again congrats and good luck!

[...] Over at Lee Odden's Online Marketing Blog, ClickZ columnist, Bruce Clay VP International Business Development, and SEO thought-leader/soothsayer-of-doom Mike Grehan laments the lack of shared vision among marketers and SEO "geeks". This is still a rising medium with a long way to go. An emerging industry with, seemingly, a lot of people who can’t deal very well with change. Just when they’ve set their stall up to sell one thing, the search engines get a little more clever with information retrieval techniques and then their optimization methods become less effective. But because they’ve invested time (and money, probably) into developing a system that seems plausible, they’ll carry on selling it. And if that’s the case, the last thing they want to hear is someone like me saying in public that we’ve moved on a tad since SEO circa 1999. [...]

Hello Mike,

Off late I've been thinking whether SEO is really necessary.

I mean to get into the first 10 spots?

Advertising is solving this issue don't you think?

Best Regards,
