Thanks Chris, that means a lot coming from an accomplished live blogger like yourself. I agree, that knowing the topic is pretty important if the live blogged post is to be anything more than a transcription.

Lee great post! One thing that I often feel is not recognized as being a major consideration before live blogging: Know the subject, or at least have decent background knowledge of the area/tactics that will be discussed.

I have found that the only way I can live blog in an actual paragraph format is due to being able to fill in the blanks with my own experience on the subject. I consider myself to be pretty good at live blogging SEM-related sessions, but would likely fall a mile behind in covering a session about JavaScript coding at a developer's conference, for example. I think the same falls true for the other prolific live bloggers in our space, including Lisa, Tamar, Barry, Marty, etc…

Another tip is to try and get the PPT from the presenter prior to the session, and then fill in the spoken “blanks” around the PPT bullets that many live bloggers miss.

Thanks as usual and keep up the great work in 2008, Lee!!!

Lee,

Our software (www.coveritlive.com) was developed specifically for live blogging. I have discussed and demo'd the product for several of your sources cited in your article with very positive results. In use around the world by hundreds of bloggers for sports, politics, conferences, Q&A sessions etc. it costs nothing to use and integrates into any site/blog in under 2 minutes. sorry for the pitch, but it really is the perfect tool for live blogging a conference.

This is great! I would only add more interaction with conference sponsors and the press. For instance, have an ad placed in the conference newspaper to entice newbies. Try to gather bios of key players from their PR folks and link to these as well. Send tweets to those cool enough to Twitter. And make sure the press knows about your blog (with photos and video) and allow full access. It also wouldn't hurt to get to sessions early so everybody knows who you are and any issues can be worked out. There's nothing worse than reading a walk-through post, especially for those who couldn't be there.

Thanks for this great post! And for the link. I'm noticing that I'm doing less live blogging and more live tweeting. One reason is that I don't to lug around the laptop.

Hey Eric, glad it was useful. For show notes on the PRSA interview, I guess you would use whatever is relevant, right? PRSA interviews, Lee Odden, SEO PR, search engine optimization, TopRank, etc. Thanks for doing the interview with me and I look forward to hearing it.

Editin your show notes from the podcast intervie we recorded the PRSA Conference podcast, I Googled you and found this very well thought out check list. I wish we had it before we started blogging this year's PRSA International Conference. But I'm bookmarking it now so we can refer to it next year. BTW, what key words and would you suggest we use in your podcast show notes?
