Thanks for a provocative post. Some of the comments about social marketing remind me of what's so wrong with "traditional" marketing. It's chock full of hyperbole; photographs retouched so they no longer resemble the real world; and copy filled with b.s. I hope social media becomes an equalizer that brings some integrity back to brand communication.

[...] How does social media affect search marketing? Searcher expectations have changed. - Searchers no longer have the sole expectation of searching to find information for a specific outcome. As people spend more and more time connecting, sharing and interacting with the social web, they now often expect to interact with what they find in the search results. More>>

Lee, The key is this going forward; You know or we know that social media is seo friendly, so with that being said, if you're going to "seo" a site, you have to tie it back to social, or rather you should. At the least it has to be a phase in your seo plan.

Which means that you know now have to come up with or sit down and figure out a social media plan that is genuine and do-able. The 2 are inexorably linked and intertwined.

It's funny - I'm not sure social media, and the different mindset of "explorer", will ever replace directed search, but it certainly has opened a new avenue in terms of how we interact with the web.

I still expect to be able to go to my search engine and find something very specific quickly - but also like to hang out with my peers on social network sites to find things I never thought to ask about or search for.

I don't see one technique ever replacing the other - just double the FUN!

Friend Connect will certainly do this for blogs, but will it be added to search results too?

Friend Connect will be rolled out on Blogger any day now, but how about a link in search or a Friend Connect count in results. Something that let's us know our friends list rates a blog or a particular blog post well?

That would be a real positive indicator that we would want to click thru to that post from a SERP.

Thanks for a great overview of how the two impact each other. At a couple of conferences I have spoken at lately, there have been lots of questions from marketers trying to understand how to measure the impact of social media on their brands. Most of them dont fully understand that social media based comments provide great context for how consumers feel about brands and products. As more consumer generated comments show up on the first page of search results, it will quickly become clear how important this channel has become.

This is a great post and I found it really interesting. I have just recently found your site and I subscribed to your RSS feed. Hope you will take the time to check out my site.
The internet has really changed now hasn't it. People don't use Google as their sole way of searching the net, people look to blogs and social media sites so much more.

Lee,

I think you are spot on. While relevant content remains king, searchers are stumbling upon social media results because of the higher quality rankings search engines give social media sites. So even from within Google, a social media site (like Wikipedia) is often served up as the first result.

Google's recent survey report "The Brand Value of Search" said:
