Thank for a reassuring post.

The graphic truly helps to visualize the concerted nature of social media and SEO in social media campaigns. I have long maintained that it is imperative for Social media marketeers to have a grasp of at the very least basic SEO. This post makes me feel vindicated.

Hi Lee
To me social networking can be useless if you are not clear what are aiming at. Great Article. Waiting for your next article!

Interesting and straight-forward. I think identifying the strategy is the most important step. I cringe when I think about all of the companies who just jump into social media thinking they'll get ROI without first deciding what their overall goal is and how they'll measure success.

Thanks for the tips, Lee. I'm still trying to find the right candidate among our b2b clients to do some experimenting with social media. It seems like it should have useful b2b applications, too, but we still haven't found any takers willing to give it a try.

Great walkthrough of the issues facing us when we try to become no. 1 on google or any other search engine.

The answer that keeps coming up for me is that no matter how much you (I) try to avoid it by being ingenious, nothing is better than creating great content and letting people know it's there.

It's of course the road least taken, since it is really about helping our customers, and not focusing on money.

"Searchers expect to not only find what they’re looking for on search engines, but to interact with the results, whether it’s through commenting, voting or sharing." This one sentence alone was like an 'Ah ha' moment for me! That interaction is exactly the definition of social network marketing, I feel. I have never heard it explained like this and it makes total sense. Thanks so much for writing it! :)

Great article. One thing I'd mention though, and in response to Bob Williams is "Yes, your social media activities can conflict with traffic.

In some cases uses social media to drive traffic may just be adding an extra step.

For instance, getting everyone to your Twitter page in hopes of then driving them to your blog is just adding more steps to the process.

best,

Chris O.

Thanks for the information Lee. Do you have any studies that compare search driven traffic to application driven? I'm wondering about the effect popular applications like Twitter and Facebook have on taking traffic away from search because people are within the application.
