I couldn't agree more about this one: "Resist the urge to go off-topic".

Instead of going off-topic you might use it as the basis for some kind of content for another site that you can get a link from. If you find yourself wanting to go off-topic often then you might need to create another place to do so.

On the web it's better to have multiple places each with a specific focus than one with no focus. It will take more work but in the long run you need to provide a valuable service and being random is not a hot commodity.

What a great blog! I especially like the point to encourage and create opportunities for members to connect with each other, and not just sticking to the top-down approach. This will in turn make members feel important and the feeling that they are actually being listened to.

As a recent graduate of Marketing and a new comer to the world of PR/social media/marketing I will use these guidelines frequently in the future by applying them immediately to my internship. It's all about growth and having a strategy to drive it.

I think an important way to build a web community is to get your content viewed/commented on by the opinion leaders in that industry. This gives credibility to your website and acts like a magnet for people who closely follow the industry/opinion leaders.

This was a timely article for me Adam.

I'll be bookmarking it for reference in the near future.

I like the laws of attraction point. That is something that makes perfect sense now that I think about the communities I see on the Web. It's something I'll keep in mind.

I think one thing in the same vein as a few of the points you make would be for Web community builders to remember that being subjective is important.

People on the Web are attracted to individuals and individual thinking. It's the same as offline interaction and connection. People look to individuals for interpretation and understanding.

I use your writing as an example of focused writing that is valuable signal on the Web, Adam.

Yours is a strong community of marketers looking to learn how to connect business with individuals.

Thanks for another great article.

I definitely agree to this statement: "Be accessible as a leader." It's the Internet where people reach out to others despite the boundaries and cultural divide. It's where you learn that an average Joe like you has a say and can compete and earn a six figure income online. :)
