I have a site, which has 20 pages in English. It ranks very well.

I created a subdomain for those 20 pages in Chinese. Will it water down my keywords for Google – i.e. will I rank lower for the keywords I currently dominate? I am worried about this, because I've essentially just created 20 new pages which don't mention my English keywords at all (because the 20 new pages are in Chinese).

Your points are right on! We've been running into many of these same issues in Spain. In addition, many of the Analytic ;platforms and tools that we use in the US are not a available in Spanish or even crawl many Spanish sites.

I don't target other languages, even if I could speak another language I would still use one. I don't want to waste a blog posts on another language and neglect my other users.

Thanks for that insight Betty. I think multilingual SEO specialists would consider translation skills and multilingual SEO skills to be very different. Like the difference between a copywriter and a SEO writer in English. Budgets are a consideration and the cost of effective implementation and performance are worth looking at in the short and long term.

As a b2b Internet marketer, we have a very small handful of clients who want create their websites in a second language. Few of them have the interest or budget to properly research the task.

Our rule so far as been to provide them with all of the needed English-language content, tags, button names, etc. and then for the client to find their own translator, normally someone intimately involved with their business and who is familiar with the terminology used in that industry. We then use the translation they provide to build and optimize the second-language website.

It's not a perfect solution, but it works well enough, considering our clients' needs and budgets.
