National Pork Board Does the Right Thing

Posted by Lee Odden on Feb 7th, 2007 in Blogging, Online Marketing |

It’s amazing what a social network, highly visible blogs and level headed communication can do.

The National Pork Board has apologized for the aggressive comments in the cease and desist against our search marketing friend, Jennifer Laycock and her Lactivist Blog’s use of “The other white milk” on t-shirts for sale that raise money for Mother’s Milk Bank.

You can however, now buy a NPB approved t-shirt that says, “Breast, the other white milk.” The employees at the NPB are also conducting a fundraising drive for Mother’s Milk Bank. Well done NPB!

What’s Your Banana Name?

Posted by Lee Odden on Feb 7th, 2007 in Blogging, Online Marketing, Viral Marketing |

No stranger to either online marketing or a sense of humor, Ed Kohler has a pretty fun project in the works called Banana Name where he’s writing names of blogs/sites on bananas and posting to the site, BananaName.com.

Here’s the post he did for OMB.

In a strange way, this reminds me of Chris Pirillo’s “rent my chest” efforts, which started out with Ponzi writing ads literally on Chris’s chest. I suspect that became impractical and evolved into the more automatic version linked above.

Let’s hope Ed “keeps it real” with the bananas, which, he has a LOT of. Check it out.

Down but not out and lessons learned

Posted by Lee Odden on Feb 7th, 2007 in Blogging, Online Marketing |

Some of our regular readers may have noticed that Online Marketing Blog was not available for about 26 hours this week. We were informed after calling our hosting company, that the site was under attack by hundreds locations sending unresolvable requests or a denial of service attack. The host shut the site down without telling us as it was on a shared server and the increased traffic was affecting other web sites.

National Pork Board Needs to Back Off

Posted by Lee Odden on Feb 2nd, 2007 in Blogging, Online Marketing, Rant |

You know those kinds of people that have nothing better to do with their time, so they have to pick on others to justify their existence? Laywers come to mind. Especially corporate lawyers.

I am a little late to the story about our friend, Jennifer Laycock of Search Engine Guide, her blog The Lactivist and the bully National Pork Board, but hey I’ve got a business too ya know? Regardless, I just had to write something up before the Super Proposal, I mean Super Bowl weekend was in full effect as this is the epitome of lameness.

Widget Marketing

Posted by Lee Odden on Feb 2nd, 2007 in Blog Marketing, Blogging, Online Marketing, Viral Marketing |

At WebmasterWorld Pubcon in Las Vegas last November, Lawrence Coborn who runs Sexy Widget as well as RateitAll.com, made quite a splash with his presentation on marketing with widgets. We interviewed Lawrence Coborn here on OMB late last year.

Since then, many marketers have been paying more attention to marketing blogs with widgets such as via the Flickr image tool, the Swicki search tool and the MyBlogLog widget in the right sidebar of this blog.

Here is a an example of a new blog widget for Online Marketing Blog, or blidget from Widgetbox that makes a widget out of the content of your blog.

Interview with MyBlogLog CEO Scott Rafer

MyBlogLog has been taking the blogosphere by storm the past few months, even before the acquisition by Yahoo. However, MyBlogLog is not a recent phenomena, it started out as a blog statistics service by Eric Marcoullier and Todd Sampson in March of 2005.

I’m a fan of MyBlogLog (TopRank Community) and despite some of the infrastructure issues related to their increased popularity, am very optimistic about what the resources brought on by Yahoo will do for the community.

No Blog? Missed Opportunity

Posted by Lee Odden on Jan 30th, 2007 in Blog Marketing, Blogging, Online Marketing, Online PR, Public Relations |

Yesterday one of our account managers emailed me about a very nice hit (mention in an article) for a media relations client (way to go Bill!) in a prominent technology publication. This pub has an online version and the topic was pretty provocative.

I did a quick search on Google blog search and noticed a significant number of blogs buzzing about this topic. It would be a great opportunity for the client to participate in those threads of dialogue and present their unique perspective. Doing so with a blog post to link back to offering more details would be a great way to connect with a community that cares deeply about the topic. Except one thing. The client doesn’t have a blog.

Blog Credibility and Ads

Posted by Lee Odden on Jan 29th, 2007 in Blogging, Online Marketing |

When the first iteration of this blog went live, there was no intention of doing anything but documenting resources and sharing information. For a short time, we ran some Google AdSense ads and then participated in the beta of the Yahoo Publisher Network for a while. We even had a few image ads.

But ads just didn’t seem right so with the exception of very small sponsor text ads for the RSS feed, there is no advertising on this blog. I suppose one could argue the whole thing is an ad, but not in an explicit way.

Search Marketing Blogs Update 012607

Posted by Lee Odden on Jan 26th, 2007 in Blogging, Online Marketing, Pay Per Click, SEO |

It’s that time of week again for new additions that have been added to the big list of search marketing blogs. This week we have 18 blogs bringing the total to about 350. I would love to add Brett Tabke’s blog to our list, but he doesn’t post very often and there’s no RSS feed. :)

Thank you to Todd Malicoat for making a new Google Custom Search Engine using the list. He’s actually added it to the sidebar of his Stuntdubl blog, which is pretty cool.

Blogging in Different Languages

Posted by Thomas McMahon on Jan 24th, 2007 in Blog Marketing, Blogging, Online Marketing |

World - FlagsThere are millions of people around the world that speak languages other than English, yet most blogs I see offer up only English posts. The thought of posting in other languages doesn’t work well with many bloggers as they only know a few languages at most and the time it would take to re-post each post isn’t something we all have the time to do. So what about automatic translation?

Having a plugin to automatically translate your blog into Spanish, Chinese or other languages would be a great way to help gain exposure and readers from other parts of the world. Not only that, but it may also help increase the authority level of your blog.
