The Yin Yang of PR and SEO

Lee Odden on Oct 16th, 2008     DMA Annual Conference, Online Marketing, Public Relations, SEO

PR SEOOrganic search (SEO) success is based fundamentally on keywords and links. You can also make a pretty easy correlation between that and the combination of messaging and media pickups important in public relations efforts.

Search engines like Google advise webmasters to create great content and let important web sites in your industry know (to attract links).  Some of the best link sources are the hardest to achieve, such as a link in a story published at a major publication or even a industry niche publication.

This is where PR and SEO savvy can combine like Yin and Yang to create competitive advantages and extend the value and reach of your online marketing/media relations efforts. Some of the public realtions tactics that can affect search engine optimization results include:

DMA08 Las Vegas Internet Marketing Roundup

Lee Odden on Oct 13th, 2008     DMA Annual Conference, Marketing PR Conferences, Online Marketing, Online PR

TopRank Online Marketing has been fortunate to present at the Direct Marketing Association annual conference for 4 years in a row and a 5th appearance several years before that. (See photos from DMA07 here) Over 10,000 marketers attend the DMA show making it the largest marketing conference in the world and with this year’s show being held in Las Vegas, it should be another great event.

The DMA has traditionally been known as an organization steadfast in marketing principles and rooted in traditional marketing education but has made quite a bit of progress in the online marketing space with it’s Search Engine Marketing Certification program and upcoming attention to social media.  In fact, this year’s DMA08 show includes online marketing sessions on:

  • Affiliate marketing
  • Consumer generated content

SES San Jose week is nearly over one might say we’ve saved some of the best internet marketing conference tips for last with the ever enthusiastic and insightful Heather Lloyd-Martin.

Heather is Chair, DMA’s Search Engine Marketing Council and President of SuccessWorks. She also blogs about copywriting at SEO Copywriting.

Attend all the “search marketing site labs” or “search marketing clinics” you can find. During a site lab, a panel of experts review Web sites on the fly and discuss how to improve them for search positioning and conversions.

Getting the Most Out of Internet Marketing Conferences

With Search Engine Strategies San Jose just around the corner, I thought it timely and appropriate to share insights on how you can get the most out of marketing conferences.

TopRank is very active attending, speaking and blogging a variety of internet marketing events, conferences and workshops. These aren’t the only reasons to attend a marketing conference though and the next 9 posts will offer some excellent insights from TopRank as well as a incredible mix of industry thought leaders that may just compound the value of your staff already attending plus motivate you to send more.

Recession or not, look no further than the headlines in any business publication and you’ll see increasing numbers of articles offering advice on how companies can best deal with tighter marketing budgets.

What Conferences Are You Attending?

Facebook Marketing Panel Web 2.0 Expo

Jeremiah Owyang posted recently asking his readers what conferences they would be attending in the coming months and I thought that would be a great question for Online Marketing Blog readers as well.

Over the past 3 years we’ve been focused on search marketing conferences but have expanded more into direct marketing, interactive and PR. We’ll continue that trend the rest of this year but with more conferences outside of search as our online marketing agency evolves.

Conferences that I’m attending in the coming months include:

Social Media Roadtrip: DMA07, SMX & PRSA International

Lee Odden on Oct 13th, 2007     DMA Annual Conference, Marketing PR Conferences, Online Marketing, PR Conferences, Search Marketing Expo, Social Media

Next week starts one heck of a week starting with DMA07 in Chicago, the largest marketing conference in the world.  On Tuesday afternoon I am speaking on a panel called “Desperately Seeking Links Baiting, Buying and Socializing for Links” with Stephan Spencer, Seth, Besmertnik and Eric Ward.

Then on Thursday, I will be presenting as part of a post conference workshop on new media, specifically social media, with Joseph Jaffee of Crayon. Wednesday afternoon and Thursday morning Joseph is covering blogs, podcasting, video casting and Second Life/virtual worlds. Thursday afternoon I will be presenting on social bookmarking and SEO as well as a grab bag session on Yahoo! Answers, Facebook, YouTube and Flickr. I might have picked a slightly different mix of applications to talk about but then again the topic selection wasn’t my call.

Serendipity of Web Awards, Cirque du Soleil and Upcoming Speaking Gigs

Lee Odden on Sep 19th, 2007     DMA Annual Conference, Marketing PR Conferences, Online Marketing, Other Events, Pubcon, TopRank Agency News

This week will be some light blogging for me as I’ll be on vacation for the rest of the week. We decided it would be a Cirque du Soleil – fest so where better to go for that than Las Vegas? We’ll see 3 of the Cirque shows there so hopefully it will satisfy any urges for peculiar French inspired circus acts for a while.

While in Las Vegas it’s possible, but unlikely, we’ll run into some of the search marketers speaking at the Shop.org conference. In fact, there’s one session on link building with Stephan Spencer and Eric Ward who I am speaking on the same topic with at the DMA07 show “Desperately Seeking Links” in Chicago Oct 16. Other SEMs on the Shop.org linking panel include Neil Patel from ACS and Rebecca Kelley from SEOmoz.

Tchotchke Report from DMA06

Lee Odden on Oct 18th, 2006     DMA Annual Conference, Marketing Industry News, Marketing PR Conferences, Online Marketing

When I attend or speak at conferences, I always, like to visit the exhibit areas to see how they’re laid out, scope out which search marketing agencies are exhibiting and to visit friends from other companies and search engines. While checking out the Interactive exhibit hall here at DMA06, I noticed a few things:

There were hardly any search marketing agencies. Kevin Lee was there with Did-It and I believe I saw iCrossing. That was it. Apparently SEOInc had a booth in the other monstrous Exhibit hall that was made up of list brokers, direct mail companies, etc.

The major search engines were there (except Ask.com and AOL) as was True Local.

DMA-06 WebmasterRadio.FM and Pubcon

Lee Odden on Oct 17th, 2006     DMA Annual Conference, Marketing PR Conferences, Online Marketing, Pubcon

WebmasterRadio.FM man of many talents, Daron Babin, gave a little video interview at DMA 06.
WebmasterRadio.FM

Be sure to check out WebmasterRadio.FM for live interviews and the best Internet radio shows on search marketing.

I believe their next stop will be WebmasterWorld’s Pubcon conference in Las Vegas Nov 14-17, which will be one hell of an event. There will be four keynote presentations including John Battelle, Danny Sullivan, Guy Kawasaki and Jon S. von Tetzchner, the fellow behind the Opera browser.

For this Pubcon I’ll be bringing Karen and Jolina (the red thing is part of our PR firm’s logo), two of our PR/SEO Project Mangers. It will be their first search marketing related conference so it should be a great event for them. I plan on doing at least 10 interviews like the one above with Daron at Pubcon, so watch out for me and my tiny camera.

Online Public Relations and Blogs

Later today I’ll be presenting here at DMA-06 on a panel called, Blogs, RSS and Podcasting with Amanda Watlington from Searching for Profit and Stephan Spencer from Netconcepts. Basically, my presentation will cover how blogs can be used as public relations tools in the context of “Push and Pull PR”. The presentation is broken up into:

  • Opportunity
  • Push and Pull PR
  • Blog Optimization & PR
  • Blogger Relations
  • Case Study

The “opportunity” section explains how many journalists are ignoring the noise of getting pitched by so many PR firms and company PR staff. Whether it’s a pitch by phone or email, many members of the media go online (98%) to find news sources (76%), story ideas (92%), experts and to research press releases (73%). The percentages come from a study done by Middleburg/Ross.
