We serve on the SES Conference Board of Advisors together and as he's elevated his status in the business world, has always been helpful and full of practical advice. You'll see that in this post about several tools for which he is an advisor.]

True or false? You never seem to have enough time in the day to get your job done.

If you answered “true”, then lets explore some tools/services that will maximize your time and effectiveness. Marshall McLuhan said “We shape our tools and afterwards our tools shape us.” If the explosion of tools to improve your website and marketing efforts over the last 3 years is any indication of how we are being shaped then there may be hope for the time and resource starved.

If you agree that content is king then we should serve a feast that uses our customers’ own words. All we have to do is leverage all the social and search data that uses our customers’ words. I offer that as a common sense recommendation. However, all too often I see people (even experienced SEMs) failing to leverage this data in their everyday workflow. Don’t you think that access to search and social intelligence while writing content that it would make you a more effective writer?

A recent study I co-authored helped prove that it provided: a significant and consistent impact on search engine results, an increase in reader engagement. and an increase in conversion. It did all that and improved content relevance across a variety of writers and online content types who used a new content coaching tool called Inbound Writer. It’s free for up to 8 documents and month and costs only $19.95 for unlimited documents.

Never write an ad your landing page can’t cash! Do you know who the most successful PPC advertiser of all time is? Amazon! That is because they built their PPC program opposite of the way most people do it. They built and continuously optimize each of their product and category pages to convert at maximum efficiency. They have loads of content to help customers make a buying decision. Only then do they focus on what ads would drive you to that page and then what keywords should trigger that ad. Most advertisers start at the keyword first. One way to avoid that mistake is using a tool like TagCrowd.

TagCrowd will make a word cloud from any text you paste in (i.e. a press release), a plain text file you can upload or a web page url. The larger that words appear on the tag cloud the more times those words appear on the page (tweak the setting for a minimum frequency of 2 or 3 to filter out some noise). One quick look at the tag cloud should give you a good clue about what your landing page is about. Use those words in your ads and as starting points for the keywords you’ll target.

Example of TopRank Newsroom Tag Cloud

What if you could get an army of writers who would compete on a regular basis to improve the effectiveness of your PPC and FaceBook ads and the only time you ever paid them was when they beat your best effort? Well thanks to crowd-sourcing company BoostCTR you can take advantage of that opportunity today. While this company is relatively new, they have been producing guaranteed lifts in click through rates (CTRs) and conversions (by around 30%) for their clients. In fact, they are so confident about their service you can get started with a free trial. You pick the ad group you want their network to optimize, then they will start a contest where their writers compete in an A/B test against your best “control” ad (you pick which of the variations you choose to be included in the contest) and you only pay when you have a winner.

I hope these tool recommendations were useful to you. As an online tool junkie I review tons of other great online marketing tools you can leverage to improve your website and marketing efforts but hopefully these 3 will give you a good head start over your competition.

It’s funny when you work in an industry for a long time that the basic things you create to make life a little easier can save others who are new to the field, a lot of time. I’ve done a few webinars and speaking events in the past few months where one of the tools suggested was a Keyword Glossary (spreadsheet) for managing category and page level optimization, keyword mapping and competitor keyword mapping.

Another tool was an Editorial Plan that documents articles/blog posts, media, promotion and planned re-purposing. There are basic building blocks for becoming more efficient with search engine optimization tasks, but I’ve received a lot of requests for them. I thought they might be useful to our readers to use for inspiration to create their own and maybe even modify and mashup into something better.

Below are screen shots which you can click to see larger versions.

Basic Keyword Glossary

After conducting research using one of the various keyword research tools, organizing that information in a useful format like a Keyword Glossary helps SEOs manage their on page optimization and it brings a measure of accountability as well. The example of above shows a matrix of competitors sites that have been optimized for the target phrases, a list of primary and secondary phrases with measures of popularity and competitiveness. The phrases are also mapped to category levels or individual pages so you know which pages are being optimized for what keywords.

Basic Content Plan for a Blog

It’s no mystery that we like blogs as an online marketing, Social, SEO and content marketing tool. Planning content through an editorial calendar (as a magazine other publication would) is essential for producing content that is of interest to the target audience, that represent target keywords, and keeps authors on track and flush with ideas on what to write about.

The spreadsheet above shows dates for publishing, titles, keywords, categories, media used, cross-posting, promotion channels/tactics and future re-purposing of the content. Organizing an editorial plan like this helps online marketers gain maximum value for their investment into content creation and also makes curation more valuable.

The best tool or format depends on your own needs and applications. That’s why I don’t link to the actual spreadsheets – at least part of the reason.

However, will be making the actual spreadsheets available at BlogWorld New York and the Vocus User’s Conference in Baltimore. Be sure you check out my sessions if you’re attending those events.

What kinds of templates have you created for managing SEO and content marketing tasks?

The SES New York 2011 conference wrapped up last week on the heels of one of the biggest Google updates in recent years.

And although there was enough Panda talk to make a passerby think we might all be zookeepers, there were other themes running through the conference as well including content, paid strategies and tools, tools, tools.

Here’s a quick recap:

Panda: The Aftermath, as it was called essentially recapped what TopRank and other content advocates have been saying along.

Create unique, quality content that is written first for the target audience and second for the search engines. It’s those who have been living dangerously – or maybe just naively – creating what’s now referred to as shallow content who likely got hit the worst.

Here are a couple items to check if your site is seeing less results than it was pre-panda:
1. Check your content and outline a content plan to create more.
Also, remember that the navigations, call-outs etc that live on each page are considered part of the content. If you don’t have enough unique content on each page to ‘out-weigh’ the navigation, you might run into trouble.
2. Google is now paying more attention to spelling and grammar. If your site is lacking in basic writing skills, fix it up.
3. Check your internal link structure. If you have links pointing to each page on the site, Google will have trouble determining which pages are truly important.

Next, the paid strategy called retargeting also seemed to have people buzzing. Retargeting is the process of delivering ads to people on the web who have either entered a shopping cart and abandoned, or visited your site – but not entered the shopping cart process.

To get started with retargeting, think about the user action and your next action.
For example, if a visitor abandoned the home page you likely will want them to see a promotional offer featuring the brand.

If a visitor abandoned the shopping cart, you can send them a reminder to complete the purchase or a reminder with a coupon. Think through when and how often you offer the coupon, however, because it doesn’t take long to train a visitor to abandon the shopping cart because they know a coupon is coming.

Overall, if your site is experiencing a high number of exits in the shopping cart process, then retargeting might be a good option for you.

As always lists and tools are popular at a marketing conference and came together as a list of tools! Check out some of the recommended tools:

1. Crazy Egg – helps determine where people are clicking on your web pages, visually
2. Clicktale – use this tool for user session info, advanced link and form analytics
3. Cross Browser Testing – allows you to test different OS, browser, application settings
4. MockFlow – an online wireframe tool for helping when developing a website
5. AttentionWizard.com – a tool for predicting where visual attention exits on a site
6. Clicktale – use for form analytics
7. 4Q, Kample – survey tool to illicit from web visitors why they are on their website and if they are completing their intended tasks
8. Mongoose Metrics, ifbyphone – for call tracking
9. WebsiteOptimization.com – if your site is known to load slow, this is a tool to help you check the speed
10. Smush.it, Dynamicdrive – a tool for smushing images

If you attended SES New York 2011, feel free to comment below adding what you thought people were buzzing about this year.

Checking out new tools is part of what we do to stay current and find ways to be more efficient with Search Engine Optimization and Social Media Marketing. Sometimes a few tools offer interesting features or stand out for some reason and rather than keep those goodies to ourselves, we share them with you. Here are a few handy social media, analytics and link building tools worth a look:

Reinvigorate – Real-time web analytics with heat maps. Ooh, the colors are so pretty – all the way to the bank. This service is A-M-A-Z-ing. Monthly, daily, hourly and page level details plus the ability to name tag registered visitors. If real-time web data is your caffeine, then this is the tool for you. There’s a dumbed down freebie version and a free trial. The paid service is very low cost starting at $10 per month.

TwentyFeet – This is a web-based dashboard that aggregates social stats from Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and bit.ly all on one place. It pings you when events are triggered and costs less than a Starbucks “blah blah latte” for an entire year. I can see it as a handy tool for a small business or no budget situation where you want to track basic social media sites. The site is run (and funded) by a German web agency in Wiesbaden called //SEIBERT/MEDIA.

SocialFlow – From the same folks that brought us TweetDeck and bit.ly, this social media engagement SaaS promises to “say the right thing to the right people at the right time” on Twitter, Facebook and Google Buzz. Scary. If it works, scary awesome. According to Om Malik, SocialFlow works by optimizing message format (hashtags + link shortening), then posts messages during your audience’s most receptive time periods, measures CTR, retweets and followers. Repeat. I just signed up for beta access so we’ll see if I can make it into the SocialFlow club.

Ontolo - From the link building virtuosos Garrett French and Ben Wills comes the new Ontolo Linkbuilding toolset described by my pal Andy Beal as “Link Building on Steroids“. Ben and Garrett have been diligent and generous in getting us a view and test, which I appreciate and hope to take advantage of soon. For now, my experience is based on the free public demo and from what I’ve heard, it’s an impressive link building tool that will save a ton of time when doing link analysis.

InfluenceFinder – This new link research tool makes MajesticSEO even better with wicked filtering options for link analysis. And we all know that links are the electricity that makes the Google world go ’round. The website is lite on information and heavy on the 7 day free trial, so you’ll need to sign up to get a look.
Funny how all these new tools conjoin two words for their names. Afraid of a little space between words, eh? Oh, what? Ah, yes. TopRank does the same thing. Damn these companies are smart.

Don't ignore digital assets in your optimization efforts

Don’t fight it: Blended search results, and hence digital asset optimization, are here (at least for now).

Text content may be your SEO poster child, but with images, video and audio content often appearing in standard search results, digital assets can no longer be treated as the ugly stepsister in the online marketing family. Many companies produce a variety of content and media that never make it to the public web.

To this point, the majority of marketers have either overlooked or ignored optimization of non-text digital assets. In fact, a recent Forrester study found:

Less than 20% of marketers insert keywords into the filenames of videos on their sites

Even fewer marketers write keyword-rich captions or create online video libraries

Yet video stands about a 50% greater chance of ranking on page one of Google

If digital asset optimization isn’t on your radar at all or simply stuck on your back burner, it’s time to rethink your strategy.

Show your digital assets a little respect with these 5 optimization tips.

1. Do your homework on the SERPs

Be sure to become familiar with the types of files and media types that Google and other search engines are prone to display for the keyword phrases you’re targeting. Certain types of queries are more prone to show local, shopping or news results and if you can identify frequently used data sources, your time figuring out what digital assets to optimize can be a lot more efficient.

In the example below, a search for “Apple iPad” shows search results from News, Twitter, Images and Video. Here, news sources range from mainstream media like CNN to ezinearticles. A savvy SEO would consider how they might leverage exposure in the news area, via social media such as blogs or Twitter as well as videos and images. Producing, optimizing and promoting relevant video and images provides an additional opportunity for visibility in addition to web pages.

The display of blended results, especially where current news is involved, is dynamic. Be sure to revisit the search results page from time to time to uncover any new data sources for assets/media you may be able to focus on.

2. Repurpose content to get the most bang for your buck
Think of innovative ways to reuse your digital assets to gain maximum search benefits. For example, if your CEO gives a presentation at an industry event:

The presentation can often be recorded on video and audio

The video can be optimized and promoted on both your website and numerous video hosting sites such as You Tube

Multiple short video snippets can be created from one master video, all of which can be optimized

A search-optimized podcast can be created from the audio, which can be placed on your website and promoted on podcast web aggregation sites

Screenshots can be taken from the video, optimized, placed on your website and promoted on sites like Flickr (check out these tools for optimizing images from Six Revisions blog)

The optimized images, podcast and video can all be used with social media press releases for even more exposure

The PowerPoint from the presentation could be uploaded to Slideshare and turned into a video with voiceover for sharing on video hosting sites

For even more ideas on re-purposing content, read “Green Online Marketing: 5 Ways to Repurpose Content“.

3. Use keyword-rich file names and tags – but keep them clear and to the point
An important element of digital asset optimization is using keyword-rich files names and tags for all images, video and audio, and ALT text for images.

That said, an even more important element is ensuring files names and tags accurately and concisely describe the digital content being presented. As much as you’d like to fit the keyword phrase “circuit breaker” into the file name for an image of a pink elephant, it just might not work.

Think of ALT text, file names and tags like this: If someone couldn’t see your image, watch your video or listen to your audio, would they know what it is from your description? Be sure to link to your digital assets using keyword anchor text.

If you have a large number of videos, PDFs or Audio files, consider creating a sitemap file that links to each of them. Include descriptive text next to each link as well. You might even benefit from creating a video sitemaps file for Google.

4. Leverage optimized landing pages for digital assets

Some poster children and ugly stepsisters might never find a way to live in harmony, but optimized text and digital assets don’t have to suffer the same fate. Include optimized on-page text a part of your optimization strategy for video and podcasts to get the best of both worlds and maximize search benefits.

For example, place videos and podcasts on their own optimized landing pages on your website. Include either keyword-rich transcripts or summaries on the landing page, depending on the length of the video or podcast.

Optimized landing pages help the search engines understand what the video or audio is all about. Plus, you’ll enhance the viewing or listening experience for visitors by giving them a high-level overview of the video or podcast.

5. Don’t forget other file types such as PDFs and MS Office Docs
If you’ve got PDFs on your site, don’t overlook them in your search engine optimization strategy. True, you could convert PDFs to HTML pages. But particularly in the B2B world, customers are looking for case studies, whitepapers and technical articles — and PDFs can still be useful for content-heavy pieces.

Keep in mind a few points for optimizing PDFs:

Ensure PDFs are text-based (vs all image)

Create a SEO friendly PDF template for use corporate-wide

Include anchor text links where relevant

Optimize the copy as you would a web page

Complete all document properties, including author, subject, description and keyword

This Search Engine Land post offers additional tips for optimizing PDFs for search.

Any other document types that Google can crawl, index and rank are also opportunities for optimization.

Are You Ready to Treat Digital Assets as One of the Family?
Incorporating digital asset optimization into your overall content optimization plan doesn’t have to be difficult, but it can create an important advantage. If you’ve got the digital assets, why not optimize them? You’ll make it that much easier for the search engines to find and index your content – all of it.

What results have you experienced from optimizing images, video, audio and the various document types now found in Google search results?

Quality inbound links are an essential element of web site marketing and search engine optimization programs to increase traffic and online sales. The greater the number of relevant and authoritative links to a web page, the greater the potential for higher search engine rankings and qualified traffic.

A recent survey from SEOmoz illustrates just how important inbound links are to rankings. An impressive 4 of the top 5 ranking factors involve inbound links:

Keyword focused anchor text from external links: 73% very high importance

External link popularity: 71% very high importance

Diversity of link sources: 67% very high importance

Trustworthiness of the domain based on link distance from trusted domains: 66% very high importance

Conversely, the No. 2 negative ranking factor was link acquisition from known link brokers or sellers (56% high importance). Incidentally, TopRank has never engaged in link acquisitions in this manner, focusing instead on earning links through creative content promotions, social media and online public relations.

Tracking links to your web pages — and those of your competitors — is a major part of any SEO strategy. Fortunately, a host of free and paid tools exist to provide a comprehensive looks at where your web pages stand.

Since link building is so important, Lee and I have collected these 10 tools for tracking inbound links for you to test:

1. Majestic-SEO

Majestic-SEO allows users to track link information for any domain – their own sites or those of competitors. Illustrated in the image below, users can access the number of:

Sub domains

Pages

Links

Referring domains

Images

NoFollow links

Redirects

By verifying ownership of a domain, users can obtain a more detailed report that includes unique links and their anchor text. With registration, the service for your own site is free. Users can buy credits to obtain that same information about other web sites such as competitors. Downloadable data is given on top anchor text, top referring domains and top pages. Plus, the tool offers a “daily update” feature that provides a daily journal of new inbound links.

Majestic SEO

2. BuzzStream Link Building

BuzzStream Link Building focuses on providing tools that help automate redundant tasks in relationship building. It’s a CRM system for link building with applications for SEO as well as online PR.

3. SEOmoz Linkscape

This inbound link tracking tool offers both a free basic version and an advanced version with a subscription to SEOmoz PRO.

The basic search (illustrated in the image below) allows users to determine the number of inbound links to a page and the number of different domains linking to a page. The tool also gives a ranking of the page based on number and quality of inbound links, as well as a ranking of the domain overall.

In the full version, users can not only judge the quality and quantity of links to their own web pages, but to their competitors as well. Users can compare number of links, number of domains and domain ranking side-by-side against competitor sites.

Users can also determine the keywords competitor sites are targeting in their anchor text and identify competitors’ most powerful links.

As I work with our clients on their link building projects, I am often testing out new tools to make the process more efficient. After meeting with Lee at PubCon South in March, Jeremy Bencken – one of the founders of BuzzStream - followed up with Lee for the opportunity to demo and test out their link building tool – BuzzStream for Link Building. Lee requested that I take a look at this tool, and I was glad for the opportunity.

For many webmasters, managing link building campaigns can seem pretty daunting. Identifying a link building strategy is one key to success. Another is ensuring link building efficiency and follow up. Identifying processes and tools to help increase this efficiency can greatly increase the amount and value of links you achieve.

BuzzStream is one such tool. Developed by the creators of ApartmentRatings.com, BuzzStream helps identify sites from which to request links, and makes this link building process efficient and human. The BuzzStream for Link Building tool works in 4 key ways: Identifying contact information, managing communications, managing link opportunities and link request sent, and monitoring backlinks achieved.

When searching for link building opportunities, BuzzStream’s BuzzMarker can help quickly identify contact information and website information to easily categorize within your BuzzStream Dashboard. By pulling this information automatically, BuzzMarker helps save time, rather than the link builder spending minutes searching for a contact email address or documenting content categories. Then, when this information is placed in the BuzzStream Dashboard, you are able to sort by a variety of factors, such as PageRank, date found, type of link, and contact status.

BuzzStream also allows you to easily manage communications between themselves and the website’s owner or writer. BuzzStream identifies Tweeting between your accounts, as well as emails being sent back and forth. This communication monitoring helps you, as a link builder, begin a relationship with this webmaster, and build it over time. The website owner is more likely to link to a person they know, so these relationships matter.

Once the link request is sent, BuzzStream catalogs this request to easily be found later. You can search by requests sent within a particular timeframe, requests sent to sites with a certain PageRank and many other sorting factors to make documenting and reporting these request simple and efficient.

The main objective to all of this opportunity documentation and relationship building is acquiring the link. BuzzStream keeps with its efficiency trend and employs a backlink checker which automatically runs each week to detect the achievement of a link from the link requests you’ve sent out. This information is then automatically documented in your contact dashboard, allowing you now to easily sort by which link you’ve received. On top of that, the backlink checker also identifies if any links were taken away, if the links were NoFollowed, if the anchor text changed, or if the page that holds your link all of a sudden becomes populated with spammy content. Because of this, you can also easily see the value of each link you’ve achieved, and you know how to request updates if necessary.

BuzzStream does an great job of streamlining the link request process, and the automatic documentation of it all is incredible. With affordable price points for up to 20 different users, BuzzStream can be an effective linking asset for individuals starting their own link building to agencies looking to automate some of their processes.

Google Webmaster Tools is a free service that provides a wealth of information directly from Google. Once you have verified a site with Google, they’ll give you access to all sorts of information.

Here are just a few features of Google Webmaster Tools:

1. Errors
Google Webmaster Tools will show all sorts of errors with a site. Not only does it show broken links on the site, but also links that are driving traffic to the site for which there is no valid page. Google even tells you pages it knows about but has been restricted from crawling. That’s good to know incase someone accidently blocks to much.

Google Webmaster Tools Error Report

2. Set Site Defaults
Tell Google to show your page with the www or without, set a geographic target and select if you want the images show up in Google’s enhanced image search; aka Google Image Labeler.

Google Webmaster Tools Site Defaults

3. Analyze Meta Descriptions and Title Tags
Google will provide a list of URLs that have duplicate title tags or duplicate meta descriptions as well as if there are pages with to short, or to long, meta descriptions or titles.

Google Webmaster Tools Analyzing Meta Data

4. Top Search Queries
Ever wondered what people search for that your show up for? Outside of the obvious of course. This type of information is available in Google Webmaster Tools. It shows what a site is showing up for and what people are clicking though on along with your ranking. It can even be filtered by type of search (web, image, mobile) and by country.

Google Webmaster Tools Top Search Queries

5. Manage Sitelinks
If a site is lucky enough to get an additional block of links under their listing in Google, these can be managed in Google Webmaster Tools. You can’t tell Google what pages to add, but you can tell Google not to show a sitelink it has created.

Google Sitelinks

6. Enhance 404 Error Pages
Google can provide a bit of JavaScript that can be embed on a 404 error page so that when it loads, Google will try to guess what the user was looking for based on what Google has indexed. It also comes with a handy Google site search box.

Google Webmaster Tools Enhanced 404 Error Pages

These are just a few of the features of Google Webmaster Tools. Google continues to add additional features and functionality and we can only hope other search engines follow suit.

[Note from Lee: We tend to get a bit heavy on the industry observations and strategy, so a nice tactics/tools post is in order. ]

There are many different tools out there for SEO’s to use on a website. Each one has different features and benefits depending on how you use them. That’s why TopRank provides SEO Tool Reviews from time to time. We showcase different tools that you may or may not know about. Some free, some paid, all good.

The basis of this SEO tool review is Firefox. “Firefox a SEO tool”, you say? Alone, Firefox is not an SEO tool, but there are many extensions and toolbars that can be added to Firefox to extend it’s possibilities past basic web browsing.

What makes Firefox so great?

It’s free.

It’s secure. If a security issue comes up, the Firefox team plugs it in just a few days.

It works on Windows, Mac and Linux. Each version with the same features and functionality.

It has a large developer network creating extensions. Most extensions are platform independent too.

It is what you want it to be. Between extensions and themes, the user can build a browser that does what they want. It is really all about you.

If you don’t already have Firefox installed, go grab it! As for extending Firefox with SEO plugins, here is a list of 11 tools we either use or have tested with descriptions from Lee:

SEOpen – 23 different metrics from back links on Yahoo and Google to Archived pages, whois and checking robots.txt.

SEO For Firefox -Aaron Wall’s clever and configurable tool with 13 different signals ranging from domain age and Page Rank to del.icio.us bookmark and .edu inbound links.

yExplore – Thomas’ handy tool offering easy right click access to Yahoo Site Explorer info.

Web Developer – Adds a menu and a toolbar to the browser with various web developer tools including the ability to disable JavaScript, images, and CSS to see what a page looks like in a text browser or for robots.

SeoQuake – Interesting tool for analyzing search results and various parameters that may influence SEO. Work can be saved for future reference or comparison to subsequent measurements. Don’t overdo it or you’re in trouble.

KGen -Keyword generator analyzes a page for keyword frequency and placement. Also offers transfer to clipboard for use when tagging bookmarks.

Niche Watch Tool – Checks back links, indexed pages, keyword frequency and several other SEO signals.

MetaTags – Offers a side bar menu showing a web page’s meta data, links, keyword frequency and others.

Search Status – Highlights nofollow links, back links, indexed pages, Alexa and Compete rankings.

Prefbar – Toggle JavaScript, Flash and images as well as spoof user agent.

The Internet Marketing instructional program including videos and tools conceived by We Build Pages, has officially launched. I think a lot of people in the search marketing industry will be wowed by the sheer volume of quality information that’s available. Currently there are a series of 12 videos from the likes of Aaron Wall, Shoemoney, Neil Patel and Jim himself. Plus, most of the famous We Build Pages SEO and link building tools have been taken offline and included in the program along with many of the private WBP tools.

I was fortunate to be included in the program and Jim was good enough to take some time and answer a few questions about Internet Marketing Ninjas during the launch to cover how/why it was started, how he was able to get some of the smartest search marketers to give up their secrets and what future enhancements are in store.

Anyone who has been in the search marketing biz knows WeBuildPages but for those neophytes to SEO from other industries that read our blog, can you share a bit on your background ith SEO and being a Link Master?

First let me say “Thanks” again for helping this project by providing an excellent training program presentation. Well done Ninja Master Lee!

I started We Build Pages in 1999 with the slogan “Designing and marketing websites”. In 2003 we dropped designing and went with a focus of SEO…especially with link building. We played the link trade game, the Pagerank buying game, the Florida game, the sandbox game, TrustRank Game, Social Media Game, and will continue to see opportunities and monitor boundaries in search of the “perfect link” that will directly increase a site’s rankings…without pissing off a search engine.

We’ve built a team that has grown to about 30, and continues to grow. Most of our employees are “Link Ninjas”, working on getting links that help our clients to get more relevant traffic, and increase their rankings along the way.

We also work on many other sites which we own. Sometimes acquiring old trusted websites and we work to monezite them.

Our latest project is the Internet Marketing Ninjas program. We’ve collected 12 of the most influential Internet Marketing minds and created a training program covering tons of internet marketing related topics.

We’ve also taken most of the public SEO tools at We Build Pages and made them no longer public. I’ve decided to throw these tools, as well as several private tools we use at We Build Pages, and offer them for free to those who join Internet Marketing Ninjas.

You had approached several people on the new Internet Marketing Ninjas program about a year a go or so. I am curious where you got the idea?

I got tired of going to conferences and watching 10 minute powerpoints of a 101 overview of a Internet Marketing related topics. Some people know what they’re talking about, many don’t. Some people are also on the wrong panels.

I often thought if you could just grab the top people, and let them talk beyond 10 minutes, and get a bit in-depth on what that person specializes in, then I’d learn way more than listening to panels of presenters. With the help of some Ninja Master Friends, and a bit of elbow grease, I think we’ve created a product that can be better than the price of an internet marketing conference. You get the “gold”, the in depth thoughts on topics covered by the best minds in the business. With the We Build Pages tools thrown in, I think it’s a steal.

Can you explain what it is and how it works? How will it stay up to date?

You get online Internet Marketing video training by a host of experts in our industry.

We’ve already got plans for additional Ninja Masters and training videos for 2008 to be included. It’ll just grow and grow. I can’t even begin to list the topics covered, often it’s getting the dirt and the gold nuggets of knowledge. I know my Internet Marketing knowledge jumped greatly after watching these videos (I’ve seen them many times now). We’re offering preview videos for each person (about 5 minutes each) as well. There’s even some nuggets in the previews as well. Members can comment on the member video pages. You also get access to formerly public We Build Pages Tools (most are no longer public), and some of our private tools as well.

You seem to have captured quite an impressive list of participants for the videos. I was surprised and honored to be asked and even more impressed when I saw the final list. How did you get them to do it?

I’ve been Lucky, I really have. I asked the best people I knew in several internet marketing categories to participate, and most said “Let’s do it!”. The others I’ll get to participate tomorrow

You decided to take the famous WeBuildPages SEO tools down and include them in the Internet Marketing Ninjas program as well as include some of your private tools. The free tools must have been good link magnets for you, why take them down?

Rand actually did a video on SEOmoz that covers the games you have to play with engines when you’re running tools. Basically the more people who use your tools, the more often the tools aren’t going to work, or the results will be skewed. Most of the public tools were being used thousands of times a day. I know that the tools will now be much more accurate, and we’ll have a lot less “hassle” if we limit the use of these tools. I gave these tools for free for years, but the time has come where I have to limit the use of the tools. I thought I’d just toss the use of these tools only to members of Internet Marketing Ninjas, as a “freebee” to them. I also threw in some tools that have never been public, actually some are the best we’ve built.

Can you describe some of the private tools that are now available to subscribers?

Jim: There’s several. Here’s a few I’m quite fond of: (Bullets added by Lee)

The Amazing Interlinker Tool. With this tool you can interlink text in your web pages like Wikipedia does. It’s a pretty powerful on page optimization tool that has other SEO uses as well.

Neighborhood Authority Finder that helps identify sites you should get links from

Common Co-Citation tool

Jim’s Link Value Tool

Some have described the price, just short of $3k, as steep. While I don’t personally agree since I’ve seen the videos, what do you say to people who are shy on price for the program?

These training and tools are not for everyone. There’s something to be said about having a “club” with only members serious enough to invest in this program. And I totally believe that those who invest in Ninjas will not be let down.

Outside of the videos and the tools, what else do you have planned for future enhancements? I suspect that after seeing the success of this program and all the exposure it will get, other search marketing experts will want to participate. Do you plan on rotating video participants, keeping the same group or going with an entirely new group next year?

We’ll just keep adding and updating to IM Ninjas. There’s already a handful of people that I’ve been talking with for 2008. We’ll just keep updating and adding Ninja Masters, as well as we’ll keep throwing in tools that we develop.

Not to give too much away, but what are some of the best tips you heard from the videos?

Oh man, hard to name so many….everyone handed out quality information filled with tips, suggestions, and theories.

Thanks Jim!

Raise conversions by 55% you say? That’s what Marketing Sherpa says in the promo copy for their new Landing Page Handbook. One of the most popular posts we’ve ever had on Online Marketing Blog was the 10 Landing Page Tips by Jon Miller of Marketo. That’s why I think this new report from Marketing Sherpa may be of interest.

You can spend a lot of time testing and fine tuning landing pages on your own from scratch, but in many cases, it makes a lot of sense to get a bit of a head start. This guide is about both the art and science of landing page creation and optimization.

The nuts and bolts of the Landing Page Handbook includes advice on page design, copy writing, tip on getting conversions via search, email, B-to-B, ecommerce and blogs plus over 100 landing page examples. There’s also research data from the Sherpa “Marketers Study” and their “Observational Study” revealing best practices and current tactics. It’s pretty much the “Landing Page Bible” when it comes to improving conversions and is no doubt timely with the holiday season fast approaching.

Of course, this is just my opinion so I am curious what others think of the guide. Please share in the comments.

Google Webmaster Tools is a great resource for any site owner. It’s designed to inform webmasters about how Google bot is interacting with their website. It gives detailed information on broken links, popular keywords and how often Google is stopping by. It’s Googles way of giving site owners the information that they need to be successful.

The Setup

Getting started with Google Webmaster Tools is not to difficult. The first thing you’ll need is a Google account. Since all Google services use the same login, you may already be setup. If you have Gmail, Adwords, Analytics, iGoogle or one of the many other services, then you are ready to go. If not, sign up for a free Google Account.

Then signup for the Webmaster Tools service. Head over to Google Webmaster Central and click on the “Improve traffic with Google Webmaster Tools” area. You’ll then be required to login or signup for the service. If you already have an account, then you’ll be let right in.

Next you’ll want to add your sites to the Dashboard. Site owners can add in as many sites as they want. Each site will then have to be verified before Google gives you insight for it.

To verify, you either upload a text file to the root of the website or add a meta tag to the index page. My preference is for the meta tag as it has fewer requirements. If you upload the text file, you’ll also need to ensure that your 404 error page is setup properly.

Verifying the site takes only a few seconds but access to the web server is necessary. Verification ensures that you are the site administrator/owner and can get the insight. If you don’t own the site, and you can’t verify it, then Google won’t give you the detailed information.

The Google Insight

Once verified, Google will automatically show you all kinds of information.

Overview

The Overview page shows you when your homepage was last crawled and how many errors Google sees, pages it can’t find, restricted files and unreachable URLs. This information is critical for any site. If you see that Google can’t get to most of your site, then there is no way they will rank it. If there is a bunch of broken links, then 301 redirects should be setup to help correct the issues.

Diagnostics

From the Overview screen, you can click into any of the web crawl errors for more information and you’ll be taken to the Diagnostics area. Google will then tell you every page it can’t find, every error it’s seeing and allow you to export those for reporting or sending off to the development team for fixing.

It’s good to note a few things here.

Some pages are restricted for a reason and fixing may not be necessary. Google is just telling you that it knows about them and the decision is up to you. If an area is suppose to be private, then don’t let Google in.

Some broken links could be coming from an outside source. If site A links to a service page on site B, but site A put in a bad URL, that’s an issue on the site A’s page. However, knowing that issue, a 301 redirect can be setup on site B’s end to correct the problem. This is probably easier than trying to contact site A and having them update their site.

Sometimes, Google is crawling your site when maybe your host goes down for a minute or other items interfere with a good crawl. This could cause Google to report that a valid link is actually broken. Just take note of that and see if Google continues to say it’s a problem. It may just be an isolated crawling error that will fix itself.

The other cool thing about the Diagnostics is that you can choose from web crawl issue and mobile crawl issues. Google Webmaster Tools are not focused on just regular web.

Statistics

The next area is Statistics. This is where Google tells you how they see your site, how others see your site, top search queries, index and subscriber stats.

Top Search Queries are words and phrases that were put into Google that returned your site. It could be phrases you are optimizing for but are more than likely items you never think of. This is great information into how people are searching.

When looking at the page you’ll see “Top search queries” and “Top search queries clicks.” The first is phrases that your site often shows up for in Google. The second is items your site often shows up for and people click on. The information is similar but what you show up for and what people actually click on can be quite different.

Google also shows you the average top position where you’re site is showing up in the search results for each phrase.

All of the search query information is averaged over seven days and is only a snapshot in time.

The What Googlebot sees area is a great way to understand what Google really thinks of your content. It’ll show you phrases in external links to your site, internal links and it’ll analyze your content. If you want to be found for sports awards, but Google sees that your site, and links, are more targeted towards high school activities, the you can see that you’ve got some work to do. What you see on the What Googlebot sees area should be in line with what you want to be found for. If it’s not, it’ll be harder to rank.

This information can also be sorted by the type of search. For example; web, image mobile and blog. It can also be sorted by country for those that want to get more information about country specific searches.

The Crawl Stats area is all about PageRank. If you want to see what pages have the highest PageRank, this is area will be of interest to you. However, it doesn’t actually tell you the PageRank of any pages.

Index Stats just has quick links to pre-formatted Google searches in case you can’t remember them.

Subscriber Stats is an interesting area that’s lacking true stats. What it does is look at the feeds on your website and tells you how many people in Google Reader, Orkut or iGoogle are subscribed to those feeds. It’s cool because you can easily see if people are subscribed to category or comment feeds. What’s lacking is that it’s not tied into FeedBurner so it doesn’t report those stats. So if you use FeedBurner, your subscribers in Google Webmaster Tools will look really low. It also doesn’t count anything but Google properties numbers. So it’s not a true measurement of all subscriber stats.

Links

Then there’s the Links area. Here you can find out who else is linking to you, which pages have the highest number of links and your internal linking structure. Click on any of the numbers and Google will list out the sites linking to that page. All information is downloadable and very handy. However, Google does say it’s a larger sampling of links than the link command in Google search shows, but it’s not necessarily 100% of all your links.

Not only is the external link data valuable, bus so is the internal link data. This is how Google sees you linking to your own site. If there are very few links to any one page, it can be an indication that the internal inking structure should be updated.

Sitemaps

The next area is Sitemaps. This is where you can upload an XML sitemap to Google to ensure they know of and crawl all the pages on your site. Stats include when it was submitted, last downloaded and number of URL submitted.

Tools

Last but not least is the Tools area. Here you can analyze your robots.txt file and run some tests to ensure the robots file isn’t blocking any good content.

There is also a Remove URL from Google area in case Google got a hold of a page they shouldn’t have.

You can even tell Google to crawl you site slower or faster with the Set the crawl rate area. For the most part, I’ve only been able to set Google to crawl slower, not faster.

There is also an Enhanced image search option. This is an interesting one. It allows users to label your images with the Google Image Labeler and improve image results. This could become quite interesting with Universal Search coming on strong. However, it’s more of a game than a technique you can use to optimize your own images.

Google Webaster Tools are a great set of resources to see how Google is interacting with your site. You can see issues, your site’s linking structure and how people are finding your site. It’s much more than other search engines are doing and something that is highly valuable for any site owner.

Earlier this year I participated in an online focus group where questions were asked about various webmaster and SEO tools. The session was run by a third party and I was able to get them to admit it was for Microsoft. Tonight, like many others that showed interest, I received an invite to register from Nathan Buggia, Sr. Product Manager of the Live Search Webmaster Tools Team.

Similar to Google’s Webmaster Tools (Vanessa Fox interview here) and Yahoo’s Site Explorer tools (Tim Mayer interview here), the services included in this Beta of Microsoft’s Windows Live Webmaster Portal appear to be split up into three categories:

Troubleshooting

Site crawling

Site Indexing

Robots.txt

Sitemaps

Sitemaps

Creation

Submission (upload, autodiscovery)

Ping

Stats

Top search terms for your domain

Top search terms for other domains

Top keywords on your site

Inbound links to your site

Inbound links to other sites

Outbound links from your site

Outbound links from other sites

Perceived site quality score

Number of pages indexed

Search Engine Land has a blog post with more info as does the Live Search Weblog from Aug 22.

At the end of the registration form, there’s an interesting question:

“Are you willing to do public relations tasks to promote your Technology Adoption Program, such as press releases, press conversations, launch events, public website case studies and videos?”

I don’t know if everyone sees that or just the initial beta testers.

Based on how well the tools work, they might be a useful alternative or redundancy. However, if they don’t work so great, I doubt too many webmasters will use them since Google and Yahoo tools have been out there and tested for a while.

Since I was registering with Firefox, there were issues after I hit submit so I’ll try again later with MSIE.

Last week I agreed with Barry’s speculation in the comments at Search Engine Land that Microsoft is developing their own set of webmaster tools. After a conversation today, I have an even stronger reason to believe this is so. I cannot disclose the source, but it is credible.

While there are an array of AdCenter tools, Microsoft is also working on additional software to be of assistance to webmasters for use with natural search results ala Google Webmaster Central and/or Yahoo Site Explorer. Unfortunately I do not have a time frame or a specific description of what the tools will be, but I do know Microsoft is putting quite a bit of effort into their development.

Personally, I say the more the merrier. If the tools are useful for general site optimization, troubleshooting, etc, then I would have no reason not to use them.

Has anyone else heard specifics on Microsoft Webmaster Tools?

The super popular social bookmarks tool that Thomas created last year has recently been updated. We’ve been keeping him exceptionally busy with “client projects that are fun, interesting, challenging” for quite a while, but he was still able to sneak in a quick update and added several social news and bookmarking services.

New services added:

Google Reader

Diigo

Netscape

DZone

Squidoo

Looklater

RecommendzIt

Segnalo

StumbleUpon

Mr. Wrong

Several of these should have been added a long time ago, but hey, we’re busy helping clients.

If you’ve used the TopRank social bookmarks tool in the past, you may want to “freshen up” your links with Google, Netscape and StumbleUpon. Hint hint.

As a reminder here are the distinguishing features:

Add as few or as many bookmark services as you like

Provides text links or to save screen space, a drop down menu

Works with most blog templates

Works with static web pages

Does not send visitors to a 3rd party site

The benefit of adding social bookmarks to your blog template or article pages on your web site is to make it easier for readers to share your content with others on social news sites and to make it easier for them to save links or bookmarks to good content using their favorite social bookmarks service.

Unlike some of the other services that launched after the one Thomas created, the TopRank social bookmarks tool will not send your visitors off your blog to a 3rd party site where they can pick the bookmark service to use. The TopRank tool creates links directly to the social news/bookmarking services without any intermediary.

Should you add 35 different social bookmarks under each post? I would not recommend it. As Neil suggested recently, pick the social news and bookmark services that seem to resonate the best with your readership and pick those to display. For now, Online Marketing Blog will continue to display a variety of links to illustrate the tool.

If you have any feedback or enhancement suggestions, we’d love to hear them!

I know what you’re thinking, where’s the blog post about this session?¬† It was lunch so I decided to take photos and a few videos instead. It will take a while to get the videos uploaded to Google Video, but I will update this post with those links later this evening.
