TopRank Speaking Events Q2 2014

During the first 3 months of 2014, I’ve had a great opportunity to connect with marketers from London to Las Vegas sharing best practices and learning what’s on the mind of the marketing and PR community.

Those experiences have helped me take the temperature of what marketers questions are so I can apply those insights in our consulting and for future presentations. Topics that seemed to be high in demand include working with influencers in combination with content marketing and social media.  

As popular as content and social media marketing are in terms of increasing budgets and implementations, many marketers are still wondering about best practices and how to get the most from their investments. This was clear from all the questions and follow up engagement I received from recent events like ClickZ Live in New York and the Marketo Marketing Nation Summit in San Francisco.

Happy Holidays 2013 Happy Holidays to you and your loved ones from TopRank Online Marketing!

It’s been an incredible year for us with new faces, new clients, improved services mix and the continued growth of our digital marketing consulting practice.

This year we’ve added some amazing talent to the TopRank team and I am very thankful for their contributions! Ours is a very dynamic industry and mutual client and company success calls for our team members to be adaptable, passionate about the work and solution oriented.

I am happy to report that they’ve answered the call impressively. We’ve taken on 20 new clients, renewed more client engagements than ever and have grown numerous programs to include an integrated mix of content, social media, SEO and online PR.

Happy 10th Birthday TopRank BlogCan you believe it? On this day in 2003 our first “hello world” blog post for TopRank’s Online Marketing Blog was published.  1,328,500 of my own words plus tens of thousands more from our team later, it’s amazing to think it has been 10 years already.

A HUGE THANK YOU goes out to you, our readers, who have engaged, shared and interacted with us over the years. Your feedback and interactions have inspired us with ideas that we’ve been able spread all over the world.

In fact, I’ll be sharing the top 10 lessons I’ve learned from 10 years of blogging as one of the opening keynote presenters at NMX BlogWorld the first week in January.  As I reflect on the awesome contributions from our team and our community to the success of  TopRank’s Online Marketing Blog, I’ll share a few of those lessons here.

It is with the greatest of sorrow that I am sharing our admired TopRank Marketing team member, Brian Larson, has passed away unexpectedly this weekend. Our condolences to Brian’s wife Erin and his family for such a tragic loss.

Brian started with TopRank about 3 years ago after having worked for over 6 years with PR Newswire. As Account Manager of Strategic Accounts at TopRank, Brian was one of the most humble, giving and professional people I’ve ever worked with. We will miss him dearly.

I can’t count how many times clients would approach me at industry conferences to say what a great guy he was to work with. He really cared about his team, clients and doing great work.

How College Grads Can Find Career Success in Digital Marketing

digital marketing jobsRecent 2013 college graduates have received their diplomas and spent the past few summer months relaxing, celebrating and continuing their job search.

Many students, particularly in the Journalism, Communication or Marketing fields are pursuing positions in the fast growing digital marketing industry to launch their careers. Fortunately, digital marketing budgets are expected to increase by 9% this year and there are many agencies seeking talent.

However, upper management like the President of tech company, PubMatic, Kirk McDonald in this WSJ article, take the perspective of, “…the right skills are very hard to find. And I’m sorry to say it, dear graduates, but you probably don’t have them.”

Despite demand for talent, college graduates often don’t qualify for the digital marketing positions available. Agencies want employees with experience, but as college grads, there’s a common feeling that you can’t gain “real-world” experience until someone gives you that opportunity.

For the past few years I’ve been giving presentations all over the world to educate marketers on the importance of an attract, engage and convert approach to content marketing. During an upcoming stretch of 30 days or so, it turns out that I’ll be giving 6 different presentations on the topic from 6 different angles.

This content marketing and optimization “6 Ways” tour starts out in San Diego next week with a presentation on how to use blogging to inspire action at the inaugural Social Media Marketing World conference.

In 2012 we had a little more of a mix of contributors from TopRank staff and a few more guest blog posts than in years post. That’s a great thing, because our agency has some of the most talented digital marketers on the web and hearing from them is important to get a flavor for our agency.
