Social Media Smarts - Tips on Marketing with Social Media

Posted by Lee Odden on Jan 30th, 2008 in Social Bookmarking, Social Media, Social Media Smarts, Social Networking |

Not too long ago I queried a number of online marketing and public relations peers ranging from Aaron Wall, Matt McGee and Neil Patel to Todd Defren, Triss Hussey and Peter Himler about sharing a few of their social media marketing tips. Out of that informal survey in combination with community specific solicitations came posts about marketing with MyBlogLog and Twitter.

However, there are many more social media communities and channels besides MBL and Twitter that I received tips on and from very reputable sources which you’ll find below. Enjoy!

SEO Buttons for Google Toolbar

Posted by Lee Odden on Mar 12th, 2007 in Google, Online Marketing, SEO Tools |

Aaron Wall published a number of nifty custom buttons for Google Toolbar in the past and now that Google Toolbar 4 is out, he’s posted a very nice collection:  Google Toolbar SEO Buttons under categories such as:  Link reputation/popularity, domain age, on-page content analysis, competitive analysis, blog link search, official search engine blogs, a nice collection of SEO related blogs and a “how to create your own buttons” tutorial. Nice.

Search Marketing Links 102906

Posted by Lee Odden on Oct 29th, 2006 in Interactive Marketing, Link Building, Online Marketing, SEO, Search Industry News |

Andy Beal comes over to the dark side and launches a new blog design using WordPress.

Rae posts an excellent interview with Brian Prince of BOTW.org.

Gord Hotchkiss of Enquiro does it again with a great article on search marketing reaching critical mass in a follow-up to his previous “Cross the Chasm” article.

Aaron Wall posts “Trusted vs Untrusted Links” and follows up with another “vs” post, “Tactical SEO vs Strategic SEO“, which is excellent, but has more to do with SEO for sites/blogs whose business model is ad revenue than advice most business web sites can take advantage of. Great advice all the same though.

Link Building Advice from the Best

Posted by Lee Odden on Sep 16th, 2006 in Link Building, Online Marketing, SEO |

Unless there’s any doubt, I am a linking fanatic. I appreciate links like they’re gold. When I talk about link building with our team, I can never stress enough the importance of linking for traffic and SEO. To me, the best way to learn about link building is to get out there and do it.

However, if you’re new, you can save quite a bit of time learning from the wisdom of others’ experience. Here are three recent posts and one bonus link on link building I highly recommend:

Rand Fishkin presents his thoughts on why email is still king for link building.

SEO Myth and Truth

Posted by Lee Odden on Aug 3rd, 2006 in Online Marketing, SEO |

Aaron wall opened today with a great post, “The Myth of a Perfectly Optimized Page” where he talks about temporary nature of most optimization and that long term, it is the creation of useful content that matters most.

My favorite quote from Aaron: “…the web is such a social medium that it requires understanding people far more than algorithms.” Bingo.

I’m banking on the notion that the future of successful optimization is focused on the creative, not the technical aspects search marketing. SEO in the early days had more to do with code manipulation than content. Today we have offline to online integration, social search, viral search marketing (link baiting), tagging, new media public relations and so forth.

Search Engine Relevancy

Posted by Lee Odden on Jun 13th, 2006 in Ask, Google, MSN, Online Marketing, SEO, Search Industry News, Yahoo |

Aaron Wall has posted an excellent article on search engine relevancy over at SEOBook.com explaining his perception of the different relevancy criteria used by Google, Yahoo and MSN. Aaron offers both a short version and long version. Yahoo is great, but can still be manipulated. Google is best at determining relevancy. MSN is still new and currently easiest to manipulate. Ask is good, but their small market share does not necessarily warrant specific attention from a SEO perspective.
