Search Engine Strategies Video

I hadn’t noticed this before, but there’s a slick little video on the main Search Engine Strategies page that expands when you mouseover it featuring shots of the conference, testimonials from several well known SES speakers, a few Incisive people and some commentary from Danny Sullivan along with “cameos” from many other people you see at all the SES shows. The comments that there are no other shows that focus just on search seem a bit over the edge since there is obviously the WebmasterWorld Pubcon conference growing by leaps and bounds.

It’s actually a good promo and I bet you see more of this sort of thing in the future. Here’s the full Flash movie.

Andy Beal notes the announcement that Danny Sullivan will be doing a keynote presentation at Pubcon in Vegas. That makes 4 keynote presentations:  Guy Kawasaki, Jon S. von Tetzchner of Opera, John Battelle and Danny. Wow, that will be some conference!

Here’s Brett’s interview with Danny posted today.

Danny Sullivan Moves On

Lee Odden on Aug 29th, 2006     Online Marketing, Search Industry News

Barry reports this morning that Danny Sullivan is leaving Search Engine Watch.

Wow. What’s next? Hell freezing over? Cats and dogs living together? What in the world will Search Engine Watch and SES be without Danny?

Seems things didn’t quite work out with Incisive Media. I think there’s less of a question as to what will Danny do without Incisive. He’s done pretty well so far and can probably do just about anything he wants on a go forward.¬† If you want to keep informed on what Danny will be doing on a go forward, he’s set up a Yahoo Group.
Best of luck to you Danny!

Here are a few more videos from Search Engine Strategies San Jose. Matt Bailey – SiteLogic, Andy Beal – Marketing Pilgrim and a short clip from Danny Sullivan’s talk with Google CEO Eric Schmidt. You can listen to the full discussion over at WebmasterRadio.FM.

Matt Bailey
Matt Bailey in between sessions talks about wookiepedia. I had no idea Matt was a Star Wars fan. :)

Andy Beal
Andy Beal before the Ask.com blogger dinner talks about the “lunatic fringe” of search marketing.

And here’s a short clip of Danny Sullivan and Google CEO Eric Schmidt answering a question from the audience about whether Google will start allowing users to monetize the use of their own clickstream data.

Danny Sullivan in USA Today

Lee Odden on Aug 3rd, 2006     Marketing PR Conferences, Online Marketing, Search Engine Strategies, Search Industry News, Search Marketing, SEO

There’s an excellent article in USA Today 08/01/06 featuring Danny Sullivan, “Got a search engine question? Ask Mr. Sullivan“. It covers very nicely, how he became involved with search marketing and also how he’s able to command his empire of expertise, mostly involving Silicon Valley companies, from a village 4 hours south of London.

There’s abundant kudos in the article for Danny from Matt Cutts of Google and Tim Mayer of Yahoo and it’s a great introduction for the uninitiated to the Search Engine Strategies conferences. Next week Search Engine Strategies meets San Jose in what may be one of the biggest SES shows to-date. Google CEO Eric Schmidt will keynote and that alone is worth going.

Live from the GooglePlex Danny Sullivan and Matt Cutts

Next week there will be a “must listen” SEO Rockstars and Daily SearchCast show on WebmasterRadio.fm. The show will start out with Todd Friesen (oilman) and Greg Boser (webguerilla) and then cut to a 45 min Danny Sullivan interview with Matt Cutts at the GooglePlex and back to Friesen and Boser. The show airs Tuesday, May 16, 2006 at 7:00 p.m. EST.
If you can’t wait and just need an audio fix of Mr. Cutts, then point your iPod over to Mike Grehan’s recently posted clip of a podcast interview he did with Matt Cutts at the GooglePlex last week. Of course there’s also this podcast interview with Matt Cutts that Chris Pirillo did at Search Engine Strategies NYC.
As long as I’m on the topic of SEO and podcasts, here’s a podcast of the fireside chat on organic seo session with Barbara Coll and Bruce Clay from ad:tech in San Francisco. (via iMediaConnection) I think they do a handy job of sizing up their audience and providing great overview information on organic SEO.

Happy Birthday Danny Sullivan

Lee Odden on Apr 17th, 2006     Online Marketing, Search Industry News

I just got into Boston for the WebmasterWorld Pubcon conference and as I am trying (in vain) to catch up on a few things, I saw Danny’s post today over at Search Engine Watch blog about having written for 10 years about search engines. Wow.

Maybe “Anniversary” is a better word than “Birthday”, but you get the point.
As usual, Danny’s post is VERY thorough, detailing how he started out all the way to a list of thanks to the people who helped him make Search Engine Watch what it is today.

After reading that post, I thought: how in the world will I ever be able to come up with interesting interview questions for Danny?¬† He’s the most transparent search engine expert on the web! There’s Search Engine Watch, Search Engine Watch blog, the Search Casts, the conferences, articles, newsletters, a personal blog and he drops in on forums and discussion threads too.

Barry Diller Keynote at SES NY 2006

Keynote presentation at Search Engine Strategies New York with Danny Sullivan and Barry Diller of IAC. Diller’s company acquired Ask Jeeves in 2005, now rebranded as Ask.com.

Diller: I have always liked Ask.com. I just felt they needed to drop the Butler (drop baggage). The butler limited the opportunity for Ask.com as a mass market player in search. He does not intend to change the “Ask” brand.

If it’s like everyone else, it doesn’t have a reason for being. Like when he started Fox, Diller didn’t want to make another of the same big networks. He Wanted to make something different.

Ask is differentiated by the way it works from the other engines. Market share doesn’t matter, relevancy does. Diller invites people to try Ask.com and see for themselves.
