SEO Basics: Unlocking Content for Search Engines

Lee Odden on Oct 15th, 2008     Online Marketing, SEO, SEO Tips

At the DMA08 conference in Las Vegas this week, the “Search Engine Experience” panel on Tuesday was presented with a number of site reviews which are great sessions because the audience gets free SEO consulting advice and speakers get to demonstrate their expertise.

One of the questions that came up was related to a site that has most of it’s content behind a login. Because search engine spiders don’t/can’t fill out forms (with some exceptions) they cannot find the content behind the login to index and include in the search results.

Why would you want your “members access only” content available to search engines?

SEO Basics: Ensure Your Site is Crawlable

Lee Odden on Oct 7th, 2008     Online Marketing, SEO, SEO Tips

Online Marketing Blog has always been about more than search engine optimization, covering digital public relations, social media marketing and plenty of other internet marketing topics. And yet, SEO is a core component of nearly every thing we do in our consulting practice.

For the web site owners  and marketers fairly new to the site optimization game, we like to offer tips based on common questions overheard in the course of providing SEO and internet marketing services.

Question: “Ensure your site is crawlable”  What would be, in your opinion, the basic conditions that need to be reunited for a website to be crawled?”

Indexed by Google in an Hour

Today Rob Key from Converseon pinged me on how fast their work promoting reforestation through a video as part of an American Express promotion hit the Google SERPs. The project is a great example of the power of social media for a great cause.

In just 4 days the video (Second Chance Trees) ranks #2 for the phrase “American Express Members Project“. It actually ranks higher than the Amex web site for the project, which is pretty impressive with over 4 million search results for the term. Maybe after indexing this blog, the link above it’ll be doing even better. :)

SEO Tips – Let the Spider Crawl

Lee Odden on May 25th, 2006     Online Marketing, SEO, SEO Tips

Over time I plan on adding more scheduled topics and features to Online Marketing Blog. The most recent has been the “Spotlight on Search” series of interviews. The newest is, “TopRank Basic SEO Tips” which will cover fundamental how-to’s on search engine optimization. The SEO tips topics will be motivated by client and prospect questions that our team answers daily.

So on to the first TopRank Basic SEO Tip: Let the Spider Crawl

For most sites, one of the first things we check is to make sure the site crawler friendly. “Crawler friendly” you say? What the heck does that mean? Search engines find sites mostly by following links from sites that are already known to find new sites and pages. The sofware programs that search engines use to perform this task are often called “Bots” or “Spiders”. You get the analogy right? “Web”, “Spiders”, “Crawl”.
