Brands Share Their Most Hair-Raising Content Marketing Horror Stories

If content marketing stories were movies, most of the ones we hear today would be romantic comedies. Brands all over the world are telling stories of how they overcame obstacles and beat the odds to make their customers fall in love with them.

While these stories are inspiring, sometimes content marketing isn’t all flowers and chocolates and happy endings. Sometimes well-intentioned marketers end up in a cabin in the woods, hearing the unmistakable roar of a chainsaw approaching.

While they’re not pleasant for any marketer to experience, content marketing horror stories can teach valuable lessons. We can learn as much from failure as we do from success–perhaps even more so.

How Does LinkedIn’s Jason Miller MAKE Marketing Magic? #MPB2B

Effective content creation requires more than setting goals, implementing a strategy and creating your assets. For content to really be great, your audience needs to see it. One of the most effective content promotion mechanisms is the use of social media.

MarketingProfs and Content Marketing Institute recently found that LinkedIn is the most effective social media platform for B2B marketers to distribute and promote content marketing assets. Instead of searching through countless websites looking for best practices, we’re taking you straight to the source.

We have partnered with MarketingProfs to bring you insights from some of the top speakers that will be presenting at MarketingProfs B2B Marketing Forum (October 20 – 23).

Marketing Superstars Tell All: Measuring Content Marketing Box Office Success

“Show me the money. Show me the money!” – Jerry Maguire

In the summer of 2010, the Internet was abuzz about the upcoming movie Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World. It was based on a comic book with a rabid cult following and directed by the indie darling behind Sean of the Dead and Hot Fuzz. When the movie was released, the buzz intensified, dominating social media for its opening weekend. By almost every measurement, it was a blockbuster success. Unfortunately for the film, the one metric it missed was number of tickets sold. Scott Pilgrim was very good at generating excitement, but failed to deliver on the one metric that mattered.

Turn It Up! Book Review of ‘Welcome to the Funnel’ by Jason Miller

Some of the greatest rock songs are short. They start with a hard count, move fast and get your blood moving with just the right amount of energy to leave you inspired and set you on a course to create something of your own.

Music can do this for you, and so can a book. So does “Welcome to the Funnel.”

I connected early on with Jason Miller’s “Welcome to the Funnel: Proven Tactics to Turn Your Social And Content Marketing Up To 11” early on. By early on, I mean before I actually knew it was a book.

Creating Content That Drives Revenue: Jason Miller and Shafqat Islam

Jason Miller and Shafqat Islam

It’s another packed house in the ROI track with LinkedIn’s Jason Miller and NewsCred’s Shafqat Islam taking the stage after Shane Snow’s inspiring session. The duo did not disappoint. When it was over, the gentleman seated behind me said, “that was the best presentation I’ve seen yet.” The gentleman next to him concurred.

Shafqat kicked it off with a fantastic segue from Shane Snow’s Che Guevara story, telling the crowd about the Che poster he proudly displayed on his wall when he was younger. He then cited the following George Bernard Shaw quote:

If at age 20 you are not a communist then you have no heart. If at age 30 you are not a capitalist then you have no brains.

If there is anyone that can leverage a rock and roll metaphor for content marketing, it’s Jason Miller @JasonMillerCA, Senior Manager, Content Marketing at LinkedIn (LinkedIn is a TopRank client).

And at the first ever Minnesota Search Marketing Association Summit, he did not disappoint.

Content marketing can often seem like a never ending sea of songs, and only the best tunes emerge as a hit. To separate the harmony from the noise, companies need to start with a content strategy that begins at the top of the funnel. With high-level and in-demand concepts, marketers can attract customers in droves, like fans to GnR show. Attracting attention and creating demand at the top of the funnel will keep your content tour rich with new fans. But how?

Not only is Jason an avid fan of 80’s rock and roll, but he’s a marketing rockstar by any definition – with a digital marketing “catalog” that would make any marketer envious.
