Keyword Modeling Analysis To Engage Your Audience – #SESSF Bill Hunt

Alexis Hall on Aug 15th, 2012     Online Marketing, Search Engine Strategies

Keywords are the core of your search engine marketing strategy. Most of us know the basics when it comes to brainstorming, generating and finalizing a list, but how can your company get beyond the basics and focus on advanced keyword analytics. The main focus of the presentation by Bill Hunt (@billhunt) at SES San Francisco focused on moving beyond data and focusing on consumer intent.

When we type in a specific inquiry we expect to find what we are looking for, but often paid search results fail us. In order to capture the user who may be disappointed by search results, marketers can better use keywords leveraging advanced keyword modeling.

Advanced Keyword Modeling

  1. Understand the ‘voice of the customer’
  2. Effectively map your content with query and query intent

Keyword Forensics Session at SES TorontoIn my preview post for SES Toronto, I counted John Alexander’s Keyword Forensics session as one of my “Must See” presentations for the 2011 conference. The promise of really digging down into keyword discovery and keyword analysis techniques sounded far too good to pass up. After all, keyword research is an essential part of any SEO process.

The session starts with an inspiring quote on the projector “Keyword Forensics – Exploring the Hidden User Search Behavior for Keywords That Are Often Missed by Keyword Researchers.”

I research keywords!  What am I missing?

Here are some good nuggets from the presentation:

With any kind of online marketing you need a place to start. Find out what kinds of search queries people are typing into the search box and you’ll know what kind of content to optimize, create and get links to.

For the most part, keyword research software and tools fall into a handful of categories. Paid and free are two as well as those that are specific to SEO or for PPC. There are a few dominant players in each category but with some interesting innovations in the past year or so it’s worth re-visiting what’s out there and which tools our dear Online Marketing Blog readers prefer.

Wordtracker vs Keyword Discovery

Lee Odden on Mar 10th, 2006     Keyword Research, Online Marketing, SEO

There’s an interesting thread over at HighRankings Forums on Wordtracker and Keyword Discovery debating the accuracy, pros and cons of each. I’ve been a Wordtracker user for at least 6 years and have been dabbling with Keyword Discovery off and on for 2 or 3 years. Both have their pluses and shortcomings.

Of course, when I need to outsource keyword analysis, I just go to Dan Thies over at SEO Research Labs, who by the way, should be the topic of the next Spotlight on Search interview.

Update: Aaron at his newly designed SEOBook site posts a link to a free link building video from one of Dan’s teleclasses.
