Reader Poll: Non SEO Services for SEO Clients

In an interview I did yesterday with the Minneapolis Star Tribune one of the things we talked about was how common it is for search engine optimization engagements to reveal many other marketing and process consulting needs. For example, one of the most common issues we run into is a lack of sales pipeline management.

Many companies do not yet have a firm grasp of their online lead generation to sales revenue, especially BtoB clients with long sales cycles and where many people might interact with a prospect before they become a client.

This conversation got me thinking about how many SEO consulting firms have begun providing additional services and also how other types of agencies have begun dabbling in SEO. I began to wonder what other search marketing agencies and marketing related companies in general have seen on the topic of services diversification. Smells like a reader poll to me!

  • Good call Tim, got to go with how well SEO vendors and consultants sell through an organization the value of analytics while pointing out the usually terrible solutions that are in place.

  • Actually, I consider analytics to be part of SEO as I do much of web design and copywriting which is why those items are not on the list.

    That is, unless you're talking about creating your own analytics software.

  • Ah but your response Lee just argues the reason it should be on the list. A good SEO helps explain the benefits of strong analytics by revealing the value of data to audiences (IT, Copywriters, web design, etc.)that may not have been previously interested what are traditionally (unfortunately) considered marketing analytics. We could argue that all online marketing requires alignment across an organization but only SEO really forces that by its dependance on different business groups. It is hard to win support for analytics when pressing for them from a Paid Search marketing perspective as others view that as an advertising/marketing responsibility; SEO takes that out of a marketers perceived bias and highlights the personal responsibility everyone has to support SEO and in turn, performance analytics

  • I tend to try and switch customers to my own hosting as then I can work on their sites when needed without worrying about passwords...ect. We all know that most results can take at least a few days or more to show on the search engines, so I can continually work on their websites as needed.

    I do offer the other services but include them in my work anyway. :-)

  • Good thoughts on analytics. Our number one outside of SEO is the call to action. It's surprising how many companies don't ask for the sale, repeated times, and make it very easy to do business with the compnay.
