Online Marketing, Social Media

social media management toolsWith every online marketing channel and discipline, there must be tools to make the task of marketing more efficient and effective. Social Media Marketing is no different. Over the past 6-9 months, I’ve been researching and reviewing a variety of social media management tools that help with everything from source network connections to campaign & social content management to monitoring & measurement. What social media marketing dashboards, software and management tools from the list above have you tested or use? Reviews, observations, insights and questions are greatly appreciated!

Obviously, tools are only as good as the expertise of the people using them, so TopRank Marketing is always interested in helping companies develop their social media roadmap and recommend the right supporting software for implementation.

    Hi Lee –

This is a great list of players in the social media management field. I like how you’ve included a broad array of vertical players – campaign tools, engagement tools, etc.

We’re releasing the beta of our product, SocialVolt STUDIO in October. We’ve incorporated engagement, campaigns, brand monitoring, cross-platform influence, social CRM, workflow and compliance all in one platform.

Let me know if you’d like to take a look!

    Sincerely,

    Scott Oppliger

Stellar collection, Lee. Thanks for compiling it. Retweeting it now.

    • leeodden says

      September 24, 2010 at 2:15 pm

Thanks TJ, appreciate it. It’s interesting how many of these tools employ social media monitoring and yet, after this post went live today, only one of the sites mentioned in the list (Shoutlet) reached out. They have no obligation to do that, just thought it was interesting.

    • leeodden says

      September 24, 2010 at 10:58 am

Maybe because the SEO on most of these sites is absolutely horrible and finding them via Google is a crapshoot. I discovered most through news stories or pitches from their PR firms. 🙂

      • John Paul says

        September 24, 2010 at 11:14 am

You would think they would be more on top their SEO. Goes to show, no matter how good your blog, or service, if you dont promote it correctly, it wont get seen.

Lee, thanks for this list. One tool does not fit all social media goals, so it’s great to see how different each of the tools are.

My company eCairn has a SaaS solution that’s great for mapping virtual communities and ranking influence. Here is a list of the top 50 social media marketing bloggers as compiled by our application. http://blog.ecairn.com/2009/11/10/nov-09-top-150-social-media-marketing-influencers/

    • leeodden says

Thanks Karen – sorry about so many. There were so many to choose from. Most of these services are paid. Most have a trial and a handful are very low cost or free. It is very likely that we’ll add cost information and Twitter handles to this list in an update.

Which tool is best in your opinion?

    • leeodden says

      September 25, 2010 at 6:55 pm

Great question Jonathan – we didn’t rank them because they haven’t all been tested. That’s unlikely because there are so many and we don’t have trials with many of them. By posting this list, I was hoping users of the various services might share their experiences.

    September 25, 2010 at 8:07 pm

Judging from the excellent hard work you’ve put into compiling this, and the announcements from some of the commenters below about interesting new products, this space seems to be getting crowded. Rather than seeing reviews of individual offerings (which will be quickly outdated) I’d rather see some good criteria for picking a suitable one out of many.

    • leeodden says

      September 26, 2010 at 10:46 am

Social Report looks like a good social media analytics tool. We’re classifying tools into several categories and Analytics is distinct from the Management tools in the list above. There’s also the broader monitoring tools as a category.

Great compilation of the growing list of SMMS tools available Lee! Kind of overwhelming.

I actually work at Awareness and use our Social Marketing Hub daily. Yes, you can say we eat our own dog food, but I prefer to use the phrase “drink our own champagne.”

I am just a wee bit biased, but absolutely love using the Hub for managing all of our content and campaigns. The time saving alone is so worth it and the ability to aggregate all comments from across all our social channels and then respond from one location is so convenient.

I also love how easy it is to pull back content if it was published with errors. Before it would take forever to have to pull back content from multiple channels. Now all I have to do it make the change and republish. That old content is pulled back and replaced by the corrected version.

I could keep going, but don’t want to hijack the comment section 😉 We do offer several live demos of our Hub and if anyone is interested in checking it out for themselves, they can tune into one. Schedule is here: http://info.awarenessnetworks.com/Social-Marketing-Hub-Demo-Webinars.html

Happy to answer any questions you or any of your readers might have.

Hey Lee,Great post and lots of wonderful resources. Thought I’d mention a couple more. We work with Spiral16 who provides the monitoring and business intelligence gathering piece for their clients. Their tool is for more in-depth information (beyond just listening) and is uber cool because of the virtualization piece, which allows you to see what’s going on on the Internet and who’s saying it. They’re a client, so I’m biased, but their tool is fantastic and more sophisticated than many other “monitoring” tools. Also, I’ve recently discovered GutCheckIt.com …. great team who spun out of a big research organization. Essentially their service lets you do quick research – whether it’s about a proposed product name, campaign idea, color choice — whatever you’re looking for consumer input on, they can provide. It’s pretty sophisticated and even the skeptic in me was impressed after taking a demo. You should check them both out … thanks for all the work you’ve now put in my future, checking out the resources above that I don’t yet know about and use. [email protected]

    • leeodden says

      October 21, 2010 at 10:45 am

Thanks Shelly, this list is not focused on social media monitoring or listening tools at all. These are all social media content, promotion and measurement tools. Ie they help manage content and market it via social channels. We really should do a more comprehensive list of listening tools though, and I’ll check out Spiral 16.

      • Anonymous says

        October 21, 2010 at 8:43 pm

I knew that, Lee … but some of these tools are beginning to creep over into the “monitoring” or intelligence gathering space, and often many of them already claim to. The savvy marketer (like you and me) knows the difference, but often the lay person does not. And it’s also not uncommon these days for the true monitoring tools to begin to cross over into the engagement and content distribution space. AAck. Everyone wants to have a product that does everything for everyone. And that’s mostly impossible.

Let me know if you ever want to test out S16 – I’m sure they would love your unbiased feedback.

Thanks again for a great resource that I’ll definitely use.

        S.

Lee, This is a great list. I know how tough it is to pinpoint all of these emerging tools. I’m not sure how far your dug into these (demos?) but I’d love to take you through Expion’s Content Library since its very much a focus on effective messages and tweets. It’s an amazing staging area that allows enterprise users to draft content, email it to local users and plan campaigns.

Let me know when you’re writing up a post about SMMS tools that help local users with content and engagement. We like to think of Expion as a social media marketing tool with guardrails and maybe even bowling bumpers!

Thank you for the heads up Erica. This is a whole new category of software/service with many providers running after it quickly. We rarely do specific reviews of software on this blog but are working on another site dedicated to reviewing software/services focused on social media, search and content marketing. You’ll be able to provide info for a listing and a case study on that site. We’ll announce it via email to people like yourself then launch a month or two later.

That’s great…it’s tough to keep our website up to date with features, so I cannot imagine trying to view demos of hundreds of platforms! Expion is on a 2 week release cycle so we’re constantly changing, growing and improving for our customers. We’ve started using Facebook as a feature “feed”. Will we be able to edit or update the profiles?

Thats a long list :). Thanks for sharing as some of them were unknown to me. Btw there are more monitoring tools that can be added here. Radian6, Webfluenz , simplify360. Currently i am using Webfluenz. Webfluenz can help you in managing your online presence fully through our Managed Services. Webfluenz is also designed to Listen, Monitor and Engage with conversations in the Social and Real Time Web.

    • leeodden says

      May 5, 2011 at 12:11 pm

Rajeev, these are not monitoring, but management tools. There is a difference. Some monitoring tools have basic publishing features but are unremarkable. webfluenz mentions “engagement” as a feature but if it doesn’t support publishing to sites like Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, etc then it’s really not a social media management tool.

Hey Marcos, this list was created over a year ago. Buddy media and Involver either were very, very difficult to find or simply were not in the management of social media marketing business through SaaS at the time.

However, we are due for a refresh I think. 🙂

    • Marcos says

      December 27, 2011 at 10:05 pm

      Hi lee

wow one year, I understand, I really though it was more recent. I will try to help you for the next article then 😉

This is short list that I elaborate some weeks ago, I used the Alexa ranking, size and number of clients, the services they offer and the design and usability level that they have in their sites. The top seven companies could be Involver, hootsuite, buddy media, vitrue, context optional, Janrain and Shoutlet . After them, there is a gap of 15-20 companies that don’t offer anything new, anyway, I am sure that I missed some important details: please don’t hesitate to criticize the list if
      you don’t agree! 🙂

The first five are also specially interesting as are five of the sixth first companies authorized to start developing apps for g++, what put them in an (obviously) unique market position.

I have one question Lee, do you know where could I find the whole market size of the Social Media Marketing market???

Hope you and the blog guys find the info useful!

Thanks so much for your answer!

      Marcos.

      • leeodden says

        December 28, 2011 at 9:46 am

Marcos, Forrester does some forecasting of the interactive marketing industry overall and breaks it down a bit into categories like search, social and display.

Here’s a link to the most recent report that includes a graph showing forecast ad spend in social: http://bit.ly/pzQXw2 Maybe from that you can extrapolate the overall market size.

Which leads me to the question. And it’s something I’ve seen many sites do. What’s the strategy behind not dating articles? Obviously, you don’t want the content to look “old” but it can lead to confusion as it has here.

This is a great list, but I still can’t find a service or software system that will allow you to add unlimited sites…there are tons of other great platforms and it only seems the top 30 or so are getting attention.

Would it be too difficult to make something open source so you could add any social network or blog to your ‘hub management software’ so you can make updates across hundreds or even thousands of sites easily? That would be awesome to have!!

Good question. The pre-requisite is that the platform has a published API. More and more platforms are offering an API for publishing to accounts on their service, but on the SMMS side, it takes time to set up and test the connection to each. Plus, there are specifics to each, such as the number of allowed characters.

However, I think you will see the number of supported platforms grow in these types of apps.
