Great news! It’s easier than ever to host a virtual event.

Not-so-great news! Every B2B brand you’ve ever heard of is ALSO hosting virtual events. And most of us are sick to death of staring at a screen 24/7.

That doesn’t mean to not do virtual events. But it does mean we have to be more strategic about putting one together. You have to bring all of your marketing might and prowess to bear in order to make sure your event is attended, and that the attendees have a great experience.

Let’s take a look at a few things you can do before, during and after a virtual event to kick it up to the next level.

A trusted resource can be a friend, colleague or industry expert and we may turn to them from time-to-time for guidance.

Today’s online marketing landscape is crowded with advice from marketers that may have the power to influence you, but not necessarily the authority to give you sage advice.

In our eBook “Winning with Authority – 15 Experts on Integrated Online Marketing”, we pulled together advice from trusted thought leaders in the marketing field. Now we present you an infographic with even more insights from the industry experts that will be presenting at the upcoming Copyblogger Authority Rainmaker conference.

18 More Amazing Search & Digital Marketing Takeaways from #MNSummit

Personally, public speaking scares the crap out of me. People staring at me for almost an hour, trying to not stutter or talk too fast, and striving to meet the expectations of a session description would turn me red and shaky for hours.

Apparently, none of the MN Search Summit speakers are subject to those nerves (or if they are, they hid it with the skill of a magician).

Since early this morning our team has been bustling around the University of St. Thomas listening to speakers from brands like TopRank Marketing clients LinkedIn and Dell as well as Moz, Distilled and several others. Each session was full of advice, tips, tools, and laughs—no shaking or red faces.

HOOOOOOOOONK.

That’s how our morning started—honking cars as we inched our way through the rush hour traffic moving towards downtown Minneapolis. The gorgeous peach-colored sunrise coupled with the intoxicating smell of coffee helped us relax despite the stress of a morning commute.

Today’s drive was different than the rest. Instead of driving to our offices with views of Lake Minnetonka and the occasional deer, we headed into the bustle of the University of St. Thomas to attend the inaugural Minnesota Search Summit— an event focused on search, social media and digital marketing.

Fourteen of my TopRank coworkers and I are spending the day hearing advice from local experts, gleaning insights from industry thought leaders, and networking with some of Minneapolis’s savvy online marketers.

Google Hummingbird

Note from Lee: You know the phrase, kill two birds with one stone? That’s what we’re doing with this post format and the topic of Hummingbird.  Our team at TopRank is known for liveblogging conferences, but this co-created blog format is something new. At the same time, we’re covering a topic (Google Hummingbird) and search + social media that I think warrants some clarity and practical advice. In this post, you’ll see insights our team members took from the SMBMSP event followed by “TopRank Tips” from Eliza and myself.

In the digital marketing world, change is inevitable. At some point in life we are all forced to adapt, change paths, learn new skills or face something we definitely weren’t expecting.

Social Media Workshops & Training – A Journey, Not a Destination

AudienceIn a past life during my career in the business world, I was a corporate trainer. Interestingly, I received training on becoming an instructor from the Army (Reserves) and the corporate world at the same time. Many of the core principles were very similar (understand your audience, clear learning objectives, inform and interact, evaluate for competence), although the subject matter was clearly different.

One of the key lessons I learned after developing various training programs and running hundreds of people through them is that skills development is never finished for a company. The temptation to create a certification program and then consider your staff “trained” is simply not realistic. This is especially true when it comes to the multi-dimensional aspects of social media and what it means for improving business.

Cheers to B2B Marketing Forum

Let me start by saying that any trip to Boston has high expectations. Just a few months ago I, along with our Executive Director of Operations Jolina Pettice, traveled to Boston to meet with one of our favorite clients.

During our stay we dined at the ‘Cheers’ bar and later ‘ran into’ NBC’s Lester Holt (ran into = sat in the same hotel lobby). In regards to the latter, one of us may have gone a little fan crazy. I won’t say who, but their name rhymes with ‘Molina’.

Suffice it to say that while attending MarketingProfs B2B Marketing Forum in Boston I fully expect to run into more celebrities while carving out time to revisit America’s favorite bar to perform my best ‘Naarm!’ call (to this day I don’t change the channel when it comes on).

social media and the lawAt TopRank Online Marketing, our Monday mornings are usually filled with lots and lots of coffee, the clicking and clacking of keyboards being furiously typed on, and the chatter of internal meetings. But this week, our Monday was full of bacon, social media, and the law.

Several of our social media savvy team attended the monthly Minneapolis and St. Paul Social Media Breakfast that delved into how social media and the law intersect.

A panel of lawyers, Emily Buchholz and John C. Pickerill, answered questions about everything ranging from copyright infringement and employers asking for account logins to what photos are ok to post and how to deal with negative comments online. If you’re involved in the social media world, legal issues can and will affect you.

The Future of Content Marketing According to Lee Odden at #CMWorld 2013

Lee Odden - Content Marketing World 2013“Content is storytelling – storytelling that creates experiences. Customers and communities are insatiable, so you have to feed them content.”

At Content Marketing World in Cleveland, Ohio – one of TopRank’s fearless leaders, Lee Odden, spoke with Content Marketers from over 40 different countries on “The Future of Search & Social” in the first breakout session of the day.

1. Content is more than information – it is storytelling that provides meaningful experiences.

Setting the stage with, “Content isn’t King – it’s the Kingdom,” Lee positions content as the reason search exists in the first place. 16% of all search queries have never been seen before. Could that possibly mean that they, or (gasp) you, are potentially creating content no one cares about?

Astronauts Tom Marshburn, Kevin Ford and Chris Hadfield chat live from the International Space Station with #NASASocial participants.

February 20th, NASA hosted a special event at their Washington headquarters in which a group of their social fans attended a day of tours, expert talks and even a livechat with astronauts on the International Space Station. My son and I are fortunate to have participated and on top of the insider look we had at NASA research, we learned a great deal about the power of social media advocacy, as well.

So what happens when an organization puts 150 of their loyal social media fans in one room for a fantastic, exclusive experience? Brand building and social reach magic, judging by the results of yesterday’s #NASASocial.

5 Tips For Marketing Yourself & Your Team At A Networking Event

Grow your professional network both online and offline.

During the summer months it seems that there is always so much to do.  By the time the work day is done, meeting strangers and discussing what you do may be the farthest thing from your mind.  However, local networking events present a plethora of opportunities for individuals and organizations as a whole.

As of May 2012 Facebook had approximately 901 million active users on a monthly basis.  Think of your own Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn connections.  Of those connections how many of them are local?  On my own personal LinkedIn network for example roughly 65% of my contacts are local connections.  Many of which I hadn’t met in person until I started attending more local marketing events.
