Speaking Publicly About Online Marketing

They say you should face your greatest fears head on and public speaking has been one of mine since I was a kid. Being shy didn’t help during those school speech assignments one bit. Anyone with me on that one?

Having worked in the search marketing/web dev business since 1997, it was only 2 years ago or so that I began to speak at events about SEO, marketing with blogs and online public relations. I think there were 3 speaking events that first year. This year it looks like 16 and there are already 8 events booked for 2008. Things can change quickly in internet time.

Serendipity of Web Awards, Cirque du Soleil and Upcoming Speaking Gigs

This week will be some light blogging for me as I’ll be on vacation for the rest of the week. We decided it would be a Cirque du Soleil – fest so where better to go for that than Las Vegas? We’ll see 3 of the Cirque shows there so hopefully it will satisfy any urges for peculiar French inspired circus acts for a while.

While in Las Vegas it’s possible, but unlikely, we’ll run into some of the search marketers speaking at the Shop.org conference. In fact, there’s one session on link building with Stephan Spencer and Eric Ward who I am speaking on the same topic with at the DMA07 show “Desperately Seeking Links” in Chicago Oct 16. Other SEMs on the Shop.org linking panel include Neil Patel from ACS and Rebecca Kelley from SEOmoz.

TopRank on TV – SES Coverage on NBC11

Local NBC affiliate NBC11 covering Silicon Valley stopped by the Search Engine Strategies conference yesterday. I happened to be at the right place at the right time and news reporter Scott Budman asked if I would do a quick interview.

My pal Loren Baker from Search Engine Journal was nearby during the interview so I gave him my camera and he took a few shots:

It went pretty quickly and I didn’t think a lot of it afterwards until several people mentioned to me that they say me on TV during the evening news. I haven’t found an online version of the clip, but did get one forwarded to me that I could download but not share. 🙁

On The Way To SES San Jose

As a result of winning the TopRank challenge, I am excitedly off to SES San Jose next weekend where I will be put up in luxury shared accommodations (Note from Lee: That’s supposed to be a 900 sq ft suite – I bet you never even see Thomas while you’re there.) and spending the week filling my head, and yours through my regular postings, with every last detail I can possibly acquire regarding search engine marketing and optimization.

So what am I looking forward to most, outside of the Google Dance, of course?

New TopRank Site Designs

toprankdesign2.jpg
Layout 2

Our emphasis on TopRank’s Online Marketing Blog has meant less attention to our company web site. However, as much of an asset the blog is, we simply could not go on any longer with a company web site designed by a non-designer (me) six years ago. I’m surprised more people have not made fun of how bad our current site is.

After careful consideration of our company goals, objectives, messaging and target audience, we’ve finally initiated a new site for TopRank Online Marketing. This site not only presents a new design, but an up to date perspective on TopRank’s holistic approach to marketing online combining SEO, paid search, social media, email marketing and social media. Other content and features include: videos, a small number of podcasts, a blog powered media room, articles, site search, email newsletter, white papers and case studies as well a significantly improved site architecture for improved user and search engine interaction.

I am happy to announce the winner of last week’s TopRank Challenge blog post contest with his nod to Stephen Colbert, “Fish Wavers & Bridge Namers – How the  Greatest Living American Reaches Unique Groups by Creating Unique Groups“. Congratulations goes to Mike with over 55% of the vote!

Mike’s winnings include a small cash award as well as his choice of upcoming Search Engine Strategies conferences.

Great job Mike for making the cut and thank you to all the TopRank team members that submitted articles to the contest.

TopRank Challenge

Inspired by Marketing Pilgrim’s past Scholarship contests (which resulted in this handy free e-book) where participants submit articles to be voted on, we decided to do something similar, but internally here at TopRank. An invitation to participate in a contest was sent to the team 2 weeks ago and 8 decided to take up the offer. Each participant has since submitted an article to Susan Misukanis and myself on a topic of their choice or from a list of suggested topics.

Susan and I have scored each entry for: relevance to audience, objective reasoning, accuracy and style, revealing the top 3 scoring articles.

TopRank Team at the Lake

One of the cool things about working for TopRank is that during the summer, we operate on “summer hours”, which means the Friday work day ends (supposed to) at noon. Most of our team takes advantage of this but it’s pretty common to see the Account Managers sticking around a bit longer. I guess we’ll need to work on that. 🙂

We also hold an all hands meeting every two weeks to do in-house training, discuss certain strategic information and for Account Teams to report on clients and demonstrate new tactics. We hold these meetings at our office on Lake Minnetonka but today we’re starting a tradition and having the bi-weekly meeting literally ON the lake.

Leveraging Social Media and SEO for Public Relations

media-relations-summit-2007.gif

Coming up very quickly next week is the Media Relations Summit in Washington D.C. and I’ll be bringing one of our account managers, Mike Yanke, who works with many of our public relations clients to learn from some of the best and brightest in the PR and media relations industry.

I’ll be joining fellow SEO/social media/PR practitioners Jamie O’Donnell and Sally Falkow, who are both flying in from California, in a session called “Media Relations Unbound: How SEO and Social Media Have Revolutionized Our Reach”. I’m speculating that Greg Jarboe is on yet another exotic island vacation. 🙂

In this session we’ll be providing both high level and practical insight into how public relations practitioners can and should leverage social media and search engine optimization to extend their reach and media relations effectiveness. Here’s the official session description:

Doing Beginning SEO Podcast Tonight

Tonight I’m recording a Beginning SEO podcast with David Brown and Brian Mark. I’ve known Brian through conferences for the past few years and I met David for the first time at SES New York. We sat next to the stripper pole in Epiar’s party bus (That’s David behind me) on it’s way to the Vintage Tub and Bath dinner party. Luckily for everyone, David and I stayed in our seats and left the dancing to Elisabeth.

I noticed that the first of four podcasts with Barry Schwartz was posted today, where he pointed out many of the forum and online resources he tracks for Search Engine Roundtable and Search Engine Land. Did Barry say 400 plus blogs and sites tracked??? WOW. I don’t know how he does it. I’m sure the assistant helps, but it’s amazing all the same.
