When registering for Web 2.0 Expo I ran into Robert Scoble, famous blogger and Managing Director of FastCompany.tv, whom I had just met 2 weeks ago in San Francisco at Media Relations Summit. He a agreed to do a quick video interview on what’s new in the Web 2.0 world and offered a few tips on how to get more out of attending conferences.

The Future of PR: Media Relations Summit 2008
Posted by Lee Odden on Apr 6th, 2008 in Online Marketing, Online PR, PR Conferences, Public Relations |Our client visit to San Francisco last week fell right next to the Media Relations Summit conference happening this week at the Westin St. Francis on Union Square. The near crossover meant a weekend in one of my favorite cities.

As one of the largest conferences dedicated to media relations, this event attracts an array of public relations practitioners including the top PR agencies in the world, large and small corporate PR staff and academics from PR programs at major universities. Overall theme seems to be looking to the future.

First up is Bill Hunt to talk about what perspective companies should take when considering bringing search marketing in-house.

- Hybrid - A mix
Beyond Linkbait with Media and Blogger Relations - SES NY
Posted by Lee Odden on Mar 19th, 2008 in Link Building, Online Marketing, Online PR, Public Relations, Search Engine Strategies |
On Thursday I’ll be presenting on a panel, “Beyond Linkbat: Getting Authoritative Mentions Online” with Chris Boggs and Sally Falkow. Sage Lewis will be moderating. I think this type of session is very timely as search engines begin to put more and more emphasis on higher quality and editorial link sources and less on sources that are easier to manipulate. Increasing competition online also means online branding and influence increase in their importance.
SES NY Keynote: SEO Lessons and the Wall Street Journal
Posted by Jolina on Mar 19th, 2008 in Enterprise SEO, Marketing PR Conferences, Online Marketing, SEO, Search Engine Strategies |After gathering around the caffeine this morning for Day 3 of SES New York, attendees gathered to listen to a keynote from Gordon McLeod, President, The Wall Street Journal Digital Network.
Gordon led the audience through the evolution of SEO within the Wall Street Journal organization, noting that they didn’t necessarily do things right the first or second time.
Since 1996, The Wall Street Journal has grown to incorporate SEO as a strategic business decision, not a grouping of tactics.
Here are some of the lessons they learned along the way:
Day Two SES NY 2008 Summary and Party Photos
Posted by Lee Odden on Mar 19th, 2008 in Marketing PR Conferences, Online Marketing, Search Engine Strategies |Day two rolled right along here at SES New York with great sessions well documented by an array of blog coverage. This includes our own Jolina Pettice who filed an SES inspired post on “Tips for Overcoming Client-Created Roadblocks” as well as session coverage of “Converting Visitors into Buyers” and the Orion panel on Universal Search. We also posted a video interview with Sara Holoubeck on current SEMPO news.
SES NY Video: Sara Holoubek on SEMPO
Posted by Lee Odden on Mar 18th, 2008 in Industry Associations, Marketing PR Conferences, SEMPO, Search Engine Strategies, Video Interviews |On day two of the Search Engine Strategies conference the expo hall has opened and I found my way past two floors of exhibitors to find the SEMPO booth staffed by the famous “free agent” and SEMPO board member, Sara Holoubek. In this video interview, Sara talks about the local SEMPO groups that are forming as well as her insight on the new SEMPO Institute Agency Certification.
You can read the reviews of SEMPO Institute’s “Insider’s Guide to Search Marketing” formerly known as the “Fundamentals of Search Marketing” and the Advanced SEO Course Review by TopRank’s Dana Larson.
Tips for Overcoming Client-Created Roadblocks
Posted by Jolina on Mar 18th, 2008 in Enterprise SEO, Marketing PR Conferences, Online Marketing, SEO, Search Engine Strategies |
While sitting in sessions at any Search Marketing Conference, you will hear agency-side search marketers asking the panel for advice on how to keep clients from standing in their own way.
Questions like:
What if my client ignores our optimization recommendations?
What if a client doesn’t see any value in social media?
Some search marketers might think working with clients who won’t implement recommendations is a waste of time. I think it’s well worth a little extra work needed to understand why they are not following recommendations and finding a work around. In fact, if you’re working for an enterprise SEO client, the ability to find work arounds is a bare minimum requirement.
Day One SES NY 2008 Summary and Photos
Posted by Lee Odden on Mar 18th, 2008 in Marketing PR Conferences, Online Marketing, Search Engine Strategies, Search Industry News |Yesterday proved to be an interesting kickoff to this year’s Search Engine Strategies conference here in New York. The Organic Listings panel was entertaining and informative as always and the Build Investment Interest in your SEO/SEM firm was an early indulgence for myself that offered great tips for those looking at the future liquidity and monetization for their agency.
Jolina weighed in with her posts on excellent sessions, Four Ways to Redfine the Customer and Three Tips for Successful Analytics. There was also a spontaneous goofball interview with Mike McDonald of WebProNews offering a few insights about the future of SES/SMX.
SES New York Video: Mike McDonald WebProNews
Posted by Lee Odden on Mar 17th, 2008 in Interviews, Marketing PR Conferences, Search Engine Strategies, Video Interviews |At SES San Jose in 2006, I took a 21 second video of Mike McDonald from WebProNews while we were standing in line for the bus to the Google Dance. That short video was followed by many other videos interviews with interesting people in the search marketing business which you can find on TopRank’s YouTube channel, and on our Videos category.
